The lyrics by Anand Bakshi and the music by RD Burman make for a magical combination. A song which speaks for itself and the song which speaks directly to a person’s heart, evoking questions and memories is again in the mesmerizing voice of Kishor Kumar, filmed on Rajesh Khanna, in the movie Aap Ki Kasam .

Tears and this song can’t be separated. The title track for the movie ‘Anamika’, featuring Jaya Bahaduri and Sanjeev Kumar, sung by the best singer of all times, Kishore Kumar, is about the longing of love, and revolves around the pain attached to that longing. The music is simply brilliant, and the song is heart wrenching.

This ‘namkeen’ song is one number that has all the fun and the ‘masti’ of love and the teasing that goes around. The music and the lyrics, and the voice of Pancham Da himself, with the sizzling chemistry of Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman in the film ‘Pukar’ is enchanting and ‘namkeen’, indeed.

#8. Dum Maaro Dum…

Dum Maaro Dum is sexy. There is no other way to describe it. Be it the brilliant rhythm or the sizzling hot Zeenat Aman; the song will set you on fire! Featured as the title track of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’, Asha Bhosle’s youthful and bold makes the song even more awesome! One of the best by Burman.

#9. Bahon Mein Chale Aao…

Another sizzling composition. Lata Mangeshkar’s perfect voice sets the tone, and Pancham Da’s music gives the song the sparkle it deserves! This song, featuring Jaya Bahaduri and Sanjeev Kumar, in ‘Anamika’, is one seductive yet romantic number; and a few musicians will be able to pull off such songs but RD Burman, obviously, does it with complete perfection and absolute grace.

#10. Raat Kali Ek Khwab Mein…

The supernatural aspect of love has to be covered in Bollywood and this song captures the feeling of divine love with an addictive yet engrossing score, which is soft as well as soothing and happy. Again, Kishore Kumar has given the song his amazing voice. Set in the film ‘Buddha Mil Gaya’, this one is the song of love, even today!

#11. Chadhti Jawani…

This song is for the girls! An infectious number, the song cannot be truer. Expressing the flamboyancy of a young girl and how everyone perceives it! Part of the film ‘Caravan’, that features Jeetendra and Aruna Irani; the choreography for the song, along with the miraculous voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi, makes the listener feel young, every time!

#12. Piya Tu Ab To Aaja…

The credit for this song needs to go the ravishing & hot Helen, and her fantabolous dance! Monica.. Oh My Darling! – the famous phrase is also a part of this song. RD Burman’s & Asha Bhosle’s sexy chemistry ensures the song blows away the mind of the listeners; forcing them to get their hips moving, all the same time!

#13. Golmal Hai Bhai…

This song is the perfect start to the legendary movie and RD Burman is the only man who, simply with a song, sets the mood for the entire movie. The song is the title track of Golmal. Burman’s tone is full of mischief and ‘nautanki’, and the song is pleasant & fun to listen to, even today.

#14. Mehbooba Mehbooba…

Sholay, Gabbar, RD Burman, Mehbooba Mehbooba == EPIC. One word can’t define Mehbooba Mehbooba, but “epic” comes close to do that. The mesmerising song is an all-time hit from an all-time hit movie, and Pancham Da’s voice gets people to dance and sing, even decades after the film made its first screening.

#15. Tujse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi…

The music of Tujhse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi is so beautiful that it puts the listener in a trance-like state and singing it is magical. The music is comforting and intriguing at the same time. This is from the film ‘Masoom’.

#16. Pyaar Hume Kis Mod Pe Le Aaya…

Pyaar Hume Kiss Mod Pe Le Aaya brings two legendary voices RD Burman and Kishore Kumar in one song! The perfect blend of despair, love, longing and the feel of being lost are captured in this evergreen number. While the movie ‘Satte Pe Satta’ was in itself amazing, this song gave the movie a strong emotional character.

#17. Gulabi Aankhen…

Anyone who has ever been in love will get this song. The song, sung by Burman himself, strikes a beautiful chord and the lyrics are so wonderful that put all of that together, and the song is an irresistible one.

#18. Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko…

The play of eyes and hearts is an old one. RD Burman, Zeenat Aman and this song, the strings and the atmosphere, the feeling of holding on to the love of your life, the feeling of being the controller and of possession, is what drives this song and makes it stay in your mind, even long after you stop listening to it.

#19. O Haseena Zulfon Wali Jaane Jahan…

Rafi and Asha do it again. ‘Teesri Manzil’, all the mysteries attached to it, with Shammi Kapoor dancing on the floor, Rafi’s melodious voice doing its magic and Asha’s bold and addictive voice really spices it all up, but the final touch is given to it by RD Burman’s sense of how this entire song feels and makes others feel. It is a dance number, it is peppy, it is romantic yet mysterious. Awesome!

#20. Is Mod Se Jaate Hain…

It is perhaps one of the strongest compositions by Pancham Da. ‘Andhi’ does deserve such a song, with its story and the way RD Burman has cut to the centre is enough to show how good he was at this. The song is sad yet peaceful, and makes you feel as if you are losing something or someone.

#21. Tumne Mujhe Dekha…

Another one of his magical songs and this one will make you want to sing it to your beloved. The lyrics are beautiful and as always, a touch of Pancham Da’s brilliance and the song becomes flawless. The music makes you feel the beauty of love, the wonder and the excitement of one single look from the person you love. Listening to this song is like taking a whiff of love.

#22. Saagar Kinare…

Have you ever thought how meditation would feel? Where you do not have to talk or do things? Where your soul only feels and only tries to cry and laugh for everything that it has ever felt? This song does the same, breaking through the barriers that we create; the song speaks a language so pure that it touches your soul. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice carries you far away and the music serves as the medium. Simply a treat!

#23. O Mahji Re…

This is another such divine creation. This song has the power to make you feel a hundred different emotions, at the same time. You HAVE to listen to it to know what we are talking about.

#24. Rim Jhim Rim Jhim…

This one is from his last movie, ‘1942 – A Love Story’. The song gives you the feel of rain, of being with someone you love, of sensuality and need. The music is progressive and gives the song a gradual pace which makes it full of anticipation and hope, a sweet longing which fills your heart and makes you wonder.

#25. Kuch Na Kaho….

‘1942 – A Love Story’ was also the last movie for Pancham Da. This song holds beauty, creation, longing, sadness, love, joy, freedom and worship all together. This single creation has the power to make a person feel strong, and only a great artist like RD Burman could have created something so beautiful.
