Kolkata 11 August 2017: Data Science Foundation (DSF), a non profit entity dedicated to the cause of Data Science (analytics and big data),  has been organising International Data Science  Summit in Kolkata since 2014. The 4th Annual International Data Science  Summit was organised on 11 August 2017 at The Park, Kolkata. The Department of Information Technology & Electronics, Govt. of West Bengal was the hosting sponsor of the Summit. The summit was also supported by NASSCOM. Shri Bratya Basu, Minister-in-Charge, Dept of IT & Electronics inaugurated the Summit as the Chief Guest along with Additional Chief Secretary – Shri Debashis Sen, Mikhail Gusev – Dy Consul General, Russian Federation, Gautam Banerjee – President, Data Science Foundation and Nirupam Chaudhuri – Head, NASSCOM East.

Mr Nirupam Chaudhuri set the context of the summit by giving a brief summary of applications of data science in various domains of businesses.

Mr Gautam Banerjee, President of Data Science Foundation (DSF) said that it is important for CXOs of companies to understand how to differentiate between IT application implementation and analytics applications to avoid failures and be successful to gain disproportionate business benefits through data science techniques.

Shri Debashis Sen emphasised the applications of data science should be more used for public infrastructure, government schemes and social good apart from corporate functions.

Shri Bratya Basu’s words were very encouraging when he said that West Bengal Govt is planning to launch National Institute of Data Science in the state.

Mr Aninda Chatterjee – Executive Director WEBEL on behalf of DSF felicitated Mr Ambarish Dasgupta – ex National Consulting Head of KPMG for being the mentor and guide to help DSF strategize building the ecosystem of Data Science since last 4 years.

Mr Angshuman Paul – VP & Executive Director, First American – the leading company in title insurance in North America with revenues close to 6 Billion dollars called out how the company is trying to apply data science techniques to develop early warning system to flag possible frauds. Mainak Sen – Director of Business Brio, a NASSCOM award winning company & finalist of Red Herring Top 100 Asia Companies explained niche techniques of machine learning like clustering to the absolute delight of the distinguished technical audience. Kaushik Dey – Practice Head of Analytics at Ericsson emphasised the key areas where data scientists should focus to successfully drive business improvements. Tanmoy Mukhopadhyay – Master Black Belt, ANZ explained the vision of DSF as a unique ‘learning cohort’ in the region for the data scientists’ community and its role towards evolving IT/ITES industry. Sanjoy Chatterjee – CTO of Ideal Analytics presented a case study for implementing GIS based analytics in transportation problems.

innovation and hurdles in scaling up in data science and how young organizations are overcoming those issues were discussed by eminent panelists including Ms Soma Banerjee, Director & CEO of Business Brio, Shantanu Som, CEO – Somnetics, Sanjoy Chatterjee, CTO – Ideal Analytics and Sarit Bose – Director of Protiviti.

Other coveted speakers included Atul Agarwal – founder of Apt Software, Bhushan Sonkusare – VP of Publicis.Sapient India, Sandeep Thakur – Principal Consultant Deep Identity and Prof Arnab Kumar Laha – IIM Ahmedabad – who is a distinguished mentor in the domain and author of best selling Data Science books worldwide.

In the last session of the day, Venu Madhav, the global P2P leader of Honeywell literally mesmerized the audience while making his point clear – a need for amalgamation of multiple disciplines to make a good data scientist.

Mr Prodip Mukhopadhyay – General Manager WEBEL launched the summit edition of the world’s first print magazine on data science – Data Astronaut during the event.

Mr Manjit Nayak – Head STPI Kolkata conferred Data Science Excellence Awards on  corporates – Deep Identity & CESC Ltd. (RPG group) and Young Data Science Leadership Award on Tanmoy Mukhopadhyay, MBB, ANZ.
