Plans on for setting up replicas of 51 peeths near Tarapith

Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA) has planned to set up replicas of the 51 Shakti peeths in the country on a 100-acre plot near the Tarapith Temple. A preliminary design has been prepared.

Shakti Peeths are shrines or divine places of the Mother Goddess. These are places that are believed to have been blessed with the presence of Shakti due to the falling of body parts of the corpse of Sati Devi, when Lord Shiva carried it and wandered throughout Aryavartha in sorrow.

Each Shakti peeth temple has shrines for Shakti and Kalabhairava, and most Shakti and Kalabhairav in the different peeths have different names.

Birbhum district itself has five peeths in Nalhateswari, Bakreswar, Fullora, Nandikeswari and Kankalitala. The rest are situated in different parts of the country.

In recent months, massive development work has been carried out to give a facelift to the place around the Tarapith Temple. A gate to welcome people has been constructed. A project has been undertaken to renovate the kitchen where the bhog is prepared. Fifty rooms have been built for sadhus in the area while 200 rooms have been constructed to relocate the shops that had been inconveniencing the pilgrims.

Arrangement for proper illumination has been done and there is a plan to set up a power sub-station only for Tarapith. A TRDA office will also be set up to ensure better monitoring of all projects.

With the development in infrastructure, the place has witnessed a heavy increase in the number of tourists; now people visit the place round the clock. The tourist flow would go up further with the setting up of the replicas of 51 peeths.

An initiative has also been taken by the State Government to set up a Karma Tirtha in Tarapith.
