Bengal Govt giving new homes for one-horned rhinos

The Bengal Government is setting up two new homes for the one-horned rhinoceros – Rasmati Jheel in the Patlakhawa forest area in Cooch Behar district and the Ramsai jungle near Gorumara National Park in Jalpaiguri district. With the number of rhinos rising steadily in the jungles of Gorumara and Jaldapara, this is a welcome step.

The river Torsa flows through the Patlakhawa forest. The earmarked area is a grassland, and hence an ideal habitat for the rhinoceros. The rhinos will be released in the ratio of two females for every male.

The district of Cooch Behar has many components of tourism; only wildlife tourism was missing. With the new home for rhinos this too will be fulfilled. There are plans to also develop an elephant safari in the district.
