20 things Mamata Banerjee said at Sanhati Dibas rally

20 things Mamata Banerjee said at Sanhati Dibas rally

The Trinamool Congress organised the annual Sanhati Dibas meet today at the Mayo Road-Gandhi statue crossing.

Sanhati Dibas (meaning ‘day of religious unity’) is observed to mark the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, an event which unleashed a wave of communal tension across the country, resulting in the deaths of hundreds. The effect of that ghastly event continues to this day.

Mamata Banerjee has always promoted communal harmony and called on people to reject the politics of division and riots, propagated by certain parties. She has also urged people not to fall into the traps of those who try to incite riots through fake news and rumours.

20 things Mamata Banerjee said at Sanhati Dibas rally

  1. We have been observing Sanhati Dibas Dec 6 and 21 July rallies since the days of our Youth Congress activism.
  2. 25 years have passed since the terrible incident. The memories are still fresh. I was on the streets monitoring the riot-hit areas of Kolkata. We had extended all help to the then Chief Minister. We do not indulge in politics when it comes to issues like this.
  3. Mother Teresa was helping people in Sealdah area during the riots in 1992-93. Entire country was engulfed by violence. Moved by the devastation, we took pledge that we will not let riots take place again. Hence, we started observing Sanhati Dibas.
  4. India is a large country with diverse religions, communities, languages, cultures and traditions. We feel pride in our diversity. Despite our differences, we are all Indians. This is our identity.
  5. The divisive politics that began 25 years ago is still continuing. A certain political party indulges in communal politics. Religion cannot be the agenda of any government. Democracy is by the people, for the people and of the people. It cannot be by a particular religion, for a particular religion and of a particular religion.
  6. Our Constitution says India is a secular country; everyone has the right to follow their religious beliefs without depriving others of their right to practice their faith.
  7. Intolerance has reached a peak. Journalists are getting killed, people are being lynched. Who has given these people the right? Govt must protect its people. Sarva Dharma Samannay must be their motto.
  8. More than 12,000 farmers have committed suicide. This is a common trend in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh. Industrialists are leaving the country out of fear. There is flight of capital from the country.
  9. Some TV channels are spreading lies about UP municipal polls. Vote share of BJP decreased by 13%. No one is talking about that. Many media owners have been scared into submission . They only focus on targeting opposition parties.
  10. Khoborer dokan (news agencies) have become bhejal khabarer dokan (fake news)
  11. Who are they to decide who can eat what? They are even dictating what pregnant women will eat. They are only issuing fatwas and inciting communal tension.
  12. We do not make distinctions among people. Bengal is a cosmopolitan State. People from UP and Bihar live in peace in Bengal. In UP they cannot even provide basic healthcare to kids, and they talk big. We challenge you to compete with us on the plank of development
  13. Using fake images the Delhi media channels (they are BJP’s channels) are targeting us. They accuse me of appeasement. If working for people is appeasement, I will continue to do it.
  14. Were Laxman Seth and Sushanta Ghosh arrested by the CPM? Was Kailash V arrested in Madhya Pradesh? No. We do not believe in vindictive politics.
  15. A true leader must take everyone along. Someone who indulges in divisive politics, cannot lead the nation.
  16. Bengal does not support ‘Divide and Rule’. Rabindranath had initiated ‘rakhee bandhan’ to protest against Partition of Bengal in 1905. He had given up his Knighthood to protest against Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Bengal has always shown the way – from doing away with Sati to legalising widow remarriage.
  17. Roti-kapda-makan must be the issue during elections. Development must be the issue during elections. Whether a party has fulfilled their manifesto must be the issue during elections.
  18. We want electoral reforms. We want state-funded elections. There must be transparency and accountability. We request the Election Commission to look into the complaints about EVMs.
  19. As long as I am alive, I will continue to speak for people. You cannot silence my voice.
  20. Be alert. Thwart attempts to disturb communal peace. Report any odd events in your locality to the administration.
