Bengal Govt to revive 6 ancient rivers

Bengal Govt to revive 6 ancient rivers

The Bengal Government has taken up a major project to rejuvenate six ancient rivers that have almost lost their course due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage and lack of required dredging over the decades.

This is another novel initiative of the Trinamool Congress Government. The project would be taken up by the State Panchayats and Rural Development Department as part of a convergence plan streamlining the State Irrigation Department Fund and NREGA.

In Purba Bardhaman district, three rivers – Banka, Khari, Gangur – and a rivulet, Dakatia have been included in the project. The other two rivers are Jamuna and Saraswati, passing through Howrah and North 24 Parganas district, respectively.

Already, four rivers are part of a rejuvenation project – Gandheswari, Amodar, Birai and Kulik – in Bankura, Hooghly and Uttar Dinajpur districts.

The project will bring immense benefit to rivers, farmers and the NREGA labourers as well, according to the state commissioners of MGNREGA.

The initial work will take off in Nandai, at the confluence of Banka and Khari rivers.
