KOLKATA, 24 JANUARY – The ability in multitasking jobs is becoming a trend in different professions.

With this trend-in-demand medical professionals sometimes opt for additional specializations.

For instance, anesthesiologists who play an important role in operation theatre (OT) during surgery can also do pain management of patients for preoperative evaluation and intra-operative care. Pain is the fifth vital sign at the root of human sufferings.

In Kolkata, several government medical colleges like R G Kar, Bangur Institute of Neurology (BIN), Sagar Dutta State General Hospital and union ministry of labour-run ESI Hospital have main managements units each operated by anesthesiologists.

Dr Rudram Muppuri, a US-based leading NRI anesthesiologist, in his different research works published in Journal of Clinical Anaesthesiology and Journal of Pain Research respectively has
focused the pain management in different classes of surgical patients during child birth or bariatric operations. He is also the Board of Director of Michigan Society of Anaesthesiologists.

He has advocated the use of lidocaine infusion (LI) to treat chemotherapy induced damage of peripheral nerves. A LI is when local anaesthetic is given by a pump over about 60 minutes into a vein. It is prescribed to patients who have widespread chronic pain.

“Cancer pain is a debilitating side effect resulting either from primary disease itself or as an adverse effect of cancer chemotherapeutic agent. Fasting and weight loss play an important role for pain management,” according to Dr Muppuri.

“It’s a matter of prime focus on how to relieve the postoperative pain though analgesic action lidocaine infusion in patients with chronic neuropathic pain is well known.

The superior use of anaesthetics in bariatric surgery giving success of relieving pain among patients. When the patients are not in pain after their obesity surgery it has lot of positive impact onp lung function and the organ does not collapse. This leads to less complication,” he added.

With regular changes in modern medical treatment protocol the concept of biohacking to control chronic pain of patients is also being used in many countries mainly United States.

Biohacking is the process of making changes to your lifestyle in order to ‘hack’ your body’s biology and feel your best. You know the saying,”Yor are what you eat?” That actually applies to humans in a border sense: Everything we put into our bodies –our foods, our thoughts, our physical movements – all affect how we behave. By biohacking yourself, you can actually transform your body so that you feel more energized, more productive and overall, feel like the best possible version of yourself.

This novel strategy is simple and advocates a balance of weight loss and fasting for 16- 24 hrs. The benefit of time restricted feeding on rodents and flies has been shown. Intermittent fasting leads to neuroplasticity and bolster chronic pain treatment.

“With the advancement of modern medical treatment the concept of postoperative pain management under the guidance of anaesthetists is also being used in some government hospitals. In western countries like US the practice is common,” said Dr Rajat Roy Chowdhury, critical care expert attached with SSKM hospital.
