According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD):

Significant Weather Features

♦ Under the influence of trough/cyclonic circulations at lower tropospheric levels over south Peninsula; scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over southwest Peninsular India during next 5 days.

Isolated heavy rainfall also likely over south & ghat areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala & Mahe and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka during 14th-16th April, 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood at lower levels. Under its influence, isolated rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha during next 4-5 days and over Jharkhand during next 24 hours.

♦ A fresh active Western Disturbance is very likely to affect Western Himalayan Region during 14th-17th April and adjoining plains during 15th-17th April. It is very likely to cause, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) during 14th-17th April over Western Himalayan Region and light isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over adjoining plains during 15th-17th April. Isolated hailstorm also very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on 14th April. Isolated heavy rainfall also very likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad on 15th & 16th April. Thunderstorm/Duststorm at isolated places also likely over West Rajasthan on 14th & 15th April, 2021.

♦ Due to thunderstorm activities over most parts of the country, no significant change in maximum temperatures likely over most parts of the country during next 4-5 days. However, Heat Wave conditions very likely in isolated pockets over Saurashtra & Kutch on 12th April.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Kerala & Mahe and at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, Odisha, Madhya Maharashtra, North Interior Karnataka and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Karnataka.

♦ Rainfall recorded (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday) (1 cm or more): Punalur-6; Thiruvananthapuram-3; Belgaum-1.

♦ Thunderstorm observed (from 1730 hours IST of yesterday to 0530 hrs IST today): at a few places over North Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala & Mahe.

♦ Yesterday, Heat Wave conditions were observed in isolated pockets over Saurashtra & Kutch.

♦ Maximum Temperature Departures as on 11-04-2021: Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Saurashtra & Kutch; at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, West Rajasthan and Gujarat Region; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; at many places over Assam & Meghalaya and Konkan & Goa; at a few places over Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka. They were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) most places over Vidarbha; at a few places over Chhattisgarh, Marathwada and Telangana; at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over North Interior Karnataka; at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra and Rayalaseema; at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Kerala & Mahe and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 42.6°C was reported at Ahmedabad (Gujarat Region) over the country.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures as on 11-04-2021: Minimum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, West Rajasthan, Saurashtra & Kutch and Madhya Maharashtra; at isolated places over Sub- Himalayan west Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. They were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad; at many places over Telangana; at a few places over Gujarat Region, West Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Lakshadweep and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 10.1°C was reported at Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) over the plains of the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The Western Disturbance as a trough in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level now runs roughly along longitude 76°E to the north of latitude 30°N.

♦ The trough in westerlies roughly along longitude 88°E to the north of latitude 24°N at 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The trough in easterlies from north Kerala to above cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood across Interior Karnataka and Marathwada at 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Comorin area & neighbourhood between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining south Sri Lanka between 3.1 km & 3.6 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ Two fresh Western Disturbances very likely to affect Western Himalayan Region from the night of 12th & 14th April, 2021.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 17th April, 2021

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ No significant change in maximum temperatures over most parts of Gujarat during next 24 hours and fall by 2-3°C thereafter.

♦ Fall in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over most parts of Central India during next 2-3 days.
