35 countries express interest to invest in Bengal

35 countries expressed their interest to invest in Bengal. The State Finance, Commerce and Industries Minister, Dr Amit Mitra held a meeting with representatives of these countries in New Delhi on April 10, 2018.

These countries are interested to invest in the sectors of port, IT, leather industry, construction, chemicals, infrastructure, solar energy etc. These proposals are scheduled to get a final shape in the next edition of Global Business Meet which will be held in February, 2019.

According to Dr Mitra, the state government is exploring a different model this year to attract more investments. MoUs will not only be signed with countries but also with provinces in different nations. Most of the representatives present in the meeting liked this proposal made by Dr Mitra.

Representatives of China, Japan, USA, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Czech Republic, Spain and several other countries were present in this preparatory meeting. Apart from Dr Mitra, the state was represented by Bengal’s Industry Secretary, state industrial corporation, the Resident Commissioner of state in New Delhi.

In the meeting Japan has expressed interest in investing in ports at Tajpur and Kulpi. China has also expressed interest in Bengal’s effort to set up a deep sea port. That apart, China wants to invest in manufacturing and infrastructure. Germany has expressed interest in developing infrastructure in the state. Spain is keen to invest in solar power sector. Australia expressed interest in the mining sector. Similarly Italy has expressed interest in leather industry. USA has expressed interest in investing in the IT sector.
