CK Birla Hospitals –CMRI adds advanced Liver Clinic to its services

28th July, 2018, Kolkata: On the eve of World Hepatitis Day, CK Birla Hospitals – CMRI inaugurated their latest Liver Clinic and addressed the rising problem of fatty liver disease affecting the urban population through an interactive session coordinated by Dr. Avik Bhattacharya, Dr. Somnath Mukherjee, Dr. Asis Chakraborty and Dr. Saswata Chatterjee. The panel of expert doctors answered various queries related to Non – Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non – Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) that occurred due to accumulation of excess fat in the liver where alcohol had minimum or no role to play. CMRI’s Liver Clinic will offer a range of evaluation services under its special introductory packages. It will stand testimony to CK Birla Hospital’s commitment towards providing advanced quality care designed especially keeping patients’ immediate and long-term requirements in mind.

Dr. Somnath Mukherjee, Consultant Gastroenterologist, CMRI focused on the importance of maintaining sanitation and hygiene when it came to daily life-style habits. Everyone should be mindful of their diet and consume only purified water as Hepatitis A and E viruses are often contaminated through water.  Poor hygiene and lack of adequate sanitation are the causes of such infection. While Dr. Asis Chakraborty, Consultant Internal Medicine, CMRI discussed the repercussions of sedentary lifestyle of urban population which has created havoc on them of late. Extra fatty diet, obesity, shift from a traditional Indian diet to a calorie heavy westernized diet, consumption of fried food and on-the-go fast food eventually bring about fat buildup in the liver. CMRI’s Liver Clinic aims to provide all-inclusive evaluation and treatment facilities along with creating awareness around lifestyle modification in order to keep liver diseases at bay.

During the interactive session Dr. Avik Bhattacharya, Intervention Radiologist – CMRI, and Dr. Saswata Chatterjee – Consultant Gastroenterologist, CMRI, revealed astonishing facts about how lean people were also prone to developing NASH. Dr. Bhattacharya also highlighted the role of radiology in infective Hepatitis which helps in quick identification of the fibrosis. Currently the incidence of liver dysfunction because of NAFLD and NASH is on the rise in India and across worldwide. At a nascent stage this disease is known as simple fatty liver, or steatosis which affects mostly obese or overweight people. Gradually, simple fatty liver becomes harmful, with inflammation and associated liver injury, and ultimately lead to developing of cirrhosis where scarring of liver tissue results in complete liver failure. In fact, in most cases liver diseases come with prevalent comorbidities like hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases.

CK Birla Hospitals comprises three landmark identities, CMRI (The Calcutta Medical Research Institute), BMB (BM Birla Heart Research Centre) and its recent venture, RBH (Rukmani Birla Hospital). It has set milestones in the healthcare Industry for over four decades. The hospitals are intrinsically bound by three integrated philosophies — Clinical Excellence, Ethical Conduct and Patient Centricity. These operating philosophies have been pivotal in making the hospitals grow and serve people who are in need of quality healthcare.
