Mrinal Sen, legendary filmmaker and Phalke awardee, passes away at 95. The man who made the world of film as his playground or a place for “Mrigaya” the hunting, a protagonist among all protagonist of Indian cinema is no more.

Mrinal Sen passed away on Sunday morning due to age-related ailments. The filmmaker was 95. He reportedly died of heart attack at around 10:30 am at his residence in Bhowanipore.

Mrinal Sen (also spelled Mrinal Shen, born 14 May 1923, died 30 December 2018) was a noted Bengali filmmaker based in Kolkata.

Along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, he was often considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Bengali parallel cinema on the global stage. Like the works of Ray and Ghatak, his cinema was known for its artistic depiction of social reality.

Although the three directors shared a healthy rivalry, they were ardent admirers of each other’s work, and in so doing, they charted the independent trajectory of parallel cinema, as a counterpoint to the mainstream fare of Hindi cinema in India. Sen was an ardent follower of Marxist philosophy.
