Government of Odisha to organize investment promotion roadshows in Tokyo, Osaka & Bangkok

Kolkata, 28 October, 2017: A delegation from Odisha led by state Finance Minister Mr. Shashi Bhusan Behera and accompanied by senior government officials along with members of the business community will visit Japan and Thailand from October 30 to November 4 to organize investment promotion roadshows and highlight opportunities in Odisha’s vibrant business ecosystem.

The roadshows in Tokyo will be organized on October 30 & 31, followed by Osaka on November 1. A roadshow focusing on Tourism will be organised at Bangkok, Thailand on November 3.

Senior government officials that will be a part of the delegation include Mr. R Balakrishnan, Development Commissioner cum Additional Chief Secretary, Mr. Rajesh Verma, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Mr. Sanjeev Chopra, Principal Secretary, Industries, Government of Odisha.

“The objective of the delegation is to initiate conversation with prospective investors from Japan and Thailand while highlighting the benefits of investing in focus sectors identified by the state which includes downstream and ancillary industries in metal sector; chemicals, plastics and petrochemicals; electronics manufacturing; food processing; apparel and tourism. Some of the leading companies from Odisha will also be a part of this delegation in order to explore collaboration opportunities with Japanese and Thai firms.” Mr. Sanjeev Chopra said.

This initiative is being undertaken to achieve the vision of Honorable Chief Minister, Shri Naveen Patnaik to attract investment worth Rs. 2.5 lakh crore by 2025 in the focus sectors of the State. Another key objective of the delegation visit will be to invite Japanese and Thai companies to the Make in Odisha Conclave 2018. After engaging with various firms during the delegation visit, investment intents are expected to be announced in the run up to the Make in Odisha Conclave.

Some of the businessmen accompanying the government delegation include Mr. Arun Mishra, Vice Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Odisha State Council, Mr Vinod Nowal, Deputy Managing Director, JSW Steel Ltd and Mr Surya Kanta Mishra, Chairman, Utkal Alumina International Limited. Besides, the delegation will be accompanied by Ms Masako Ono, renowned Odissi dancer who has made Odisha her home for the past decade.

Last month, a delegation from Odisha led by Industries Minister Mr Niranjan Pujari visited the Japanese embassy in New Delhi and met senior officials of Japanese firms to discuss investment opportunities that Odisha has to offer.

 

Following the success of Make in Odisha and Investor’s meet in Mumbai and Bengaluru in 2016, Odisha has already received firm investment commitments for 74 projects worth more than Rs 2 lakh Crore and currently the state government is focusing on rapid implementation of these projects.

The State Government is working towards attracting 2.5 lakh crores of investment and create 3 million new jobs through industrial development in the focus sectors as per the Vision 2025. Odisha is also offering special incentives to employment intensive industries, directly contributing to an increase in the GDP of the state. With Odisha being one of the leaders in Ease of Doing Business and the pioneers of Single Window Clearance procedures, the state government is confident of providing approvals within 30 days and also ensure rapid implementation of the investment proposals. The competitive cost of doing business in Odisha is another attraction for the investors.

Under the leadership of Hon’ble CM, Shri Naveen Patnaik, the state registered a GSDP growth rate of 7.94 percent in 2016-17, surpassing the national growth rate of 7.1 percent. Live manufacturing growth (year on year) between 2015-16 and 2016-17 for Odisha is 16.5%, which stands at 4.6% for India.
