A festival celebrating books, culture, music, food at the College Square Grounds, the seat of Bengal Renaissance

Kolkata, 13th April, 2018: Naba Barsha Boi Utsab, another festival in the celebration calendar of the Bengalis was started in 2014 to celebrate everything that is Bengali that bears resemblance to the Bengali culture and above all upholds the legacy of Bengali Literature. Organized by the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, who also organizes International Kolkata Book Fair, Naba Barsha Boi Utsab is celebrated every year during Bangla Naba Barsha at College Square Grounds which is considered to be the seat of Bengal Renaissance and the city’s most culturally vibrant zone surrounded by century old institutions. The fourth edition of Naba Barsha Boi Utsab was inaugurated in the esteemed presence of the Sri Debasish Kumar, Hon’ble Member, Mayor – In – Council along-with eminent literary personalities Sri Sankha Ghosh, Sri Samaresh Majumdar, Sri Sanjib Chattopadhyay, Sri Smaranjit Chakraborti and Srijato along with Guild members Sri Sudhangshu Dey, President, Publishers & Booksellers Guild and Sri Tridib Chatterjee, Honorary General Secretary, Publishers & Booksellers Guild.  The inaugural event began with a performance by ladies dhaki along with folk performances like Dhamsa Madol, ranpa, a performance by school students on Bengali Literature.

College Square is not just home for universities, colleges and schools that are over 200 years old but also considered to be the seat of Bengal Renaissance. The whiff of Boi Para takes one back to College Street and the memories that entail with it. In these 9 days of merrymaking and euphoria several artists would engage us in their mesmerizing performances. The Naba Barsha Boi Utsab started with the Grand Inaugural event on the 13th April.

The fair was inaugurated today and will continue till the 21st of April 2018, from 2pm to 9pm. The fair would host about 75 stalls comprising of not just books but also artistic wooden handicrafts. The publishers of the book stalls planned to bring more joy to the hearts of book lovers this Naba Barsha by offering a minimum 20% discount on the total purchase of books from their stalls.

Mr. Tridib Chatterjee, Honorary General Secretary, Publishers & Booksellers Guild addressed the media saying, “Nababarsha Boi Utsab not only celebrates our Bengali Heritage, Culture and Tradition but also celebrates the spirit of our rich Bengali literature. We are indeed grateful to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for helping us coordinate this event. I welcome you all to the 9 days of festivity and celebrations. We hope like every year, this year too we are able to live up to your expectations. We, the members of Publishers and Booksellers Guild extend our gratitude to our Hon’ble Chief Minister for her unfailing support to this event, Govt of West Bengal and Kolkata Police,”

This year, Naba Barsha Boi Utsab 2018 would embrace captivating performances over the next 9 days from musical performances by renowned musicians and Bauls, discussions with authors on the ever evolving Bengali Literature and several competitions such as music contest, debate competitions that would be participated by students from various musical institutions.
