PM condoles the passing away of Indian columnist, humorist and playwright Shri Taarak Mehta
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has condoled the passing away of Indian columnist, humorist and playwright Shri Taarak Mehta.
“सुप्रसिद्ध नाटककार और हास्य लेखक तारक मेहता जी को श्रद्धांजलि। उन्होंने जीवन भर व्यंग्य और कलम का साथ नहीं छोड़ा।
मुझे तारक मेहता जी से कई बार मिलने का सौभाग्य मिला। जब उन्हें पद्मश्री से सम्मानित किया गया, तब भी उनसे मिलने का अवसर मिला।
तारक मेहता जी के लेखन में भारत की विविधता में एकता की झलक दिखती है । टप्पू समेत कई किरदार लोगों के दिलों में बस गये।”, the Prime Minister said.

Taarak Mehta was an Indian columnist, humorist, writer and playwright who was best known for the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma in the Gujarati language. He had translated and adapted several comedies into Gujarati, and had been well-known figure in the Gujarati theatre.
The humorous weekly column first appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971 and ever since has been looking at contemporary issues from a different perspective. He had published 80 books, over the years, three books are based on the columns he wrote in Gujarati newspaper Divya Bhaskar while rest were compiled from the stories in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
In 2008 SAB TV, a popular entertainment channel in India, started a show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah that is based on his column,and soon it became the flagship show of the channel.
