Rath Yatra Utsav Samity Celebrate Shri Jagannath Rath Yatra at Salt Lake, Kolkata

Kolkata, 14th, July, 2018Shri Jagannath Ratti Yatra was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Salt Lake. Three 25 feet – large well-decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Maata Subhadra and Lord Balaram are pulled through a 5km route by over 15 thousand devotees. The procession included dance troupe performances on Bengali and Hindi devotional music on mobile stages built on trailers. The devotees sang and danced with the procession as well. Hundreds of people carried out Aarti of the chariots at various aarti points. This was the 27th year of Rath Yatra celebration in Salt Lake township.

The Event was attended by Sri. Subrata Mukherjee, Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development; Sri. Firhad Bobby Hakim, Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development & Municipal AffairsSri. Sujit Bose, Member of Legislative Assembly;  Sri. Sabyasachi Dutta, Mayor of Bidhannagar & many others.

Speaking about the event, Govind Beriwala, Convener of the event said, “Rath Yatra celebrations cut across all caste and class – we are all the same in the eyes of Lord Jagannath and as equals, we pull his chariot and offer prayers today. The purpose of this celebration is to bring the community together, spread joy and happiness. It is an occasion when Lord himself comes out of his temple to meet his devotees who are unable to find time to come to the temple. We have made arrangements to distribute lunch prasad to almost 3000 people every day from CB 54, Salt Lake.”

Rath Yatra marks the beginning of 8 day long celebrations. There is pravachan by Chinaya Mission every morning, almost 3000 people eat lunch Prasad every afternoon and there are cultural performances every evening. This year, our main attractions are dance drama by Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya on 19th July and a classical music performance by Shri Shubham Ghosh – one of leading disciples of Pandit Jasraj. Ulta Rath will happen on 22nd July at 4pm. At the end of the festivals, almost 200 couples perform Arti together.
