Bengal Govt employs Doppler machines for detecting silt
The State Government is employing Doppler machines for detecting silt in the Muriganga River, which drains into the Bay of Bengal through the Sundarbans delta. These Doppler machines, called aquatic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) are linked to satellites.
Muriganga forms the chief passage for pilgrims to the Gangasagar Mela. To reach Sagar Island, everyone has to cross over from Lot 8 in Kakdweep across the Muriganga.
Earlier, silt used to be a major problem for vessels, especially during low tide. Now, with the employment of these machines, silt is being regularly detected and dredged. Hence, jetty numbers 3, 4 and 5 at Lot 8 can be used during the periods of low tide too.
The State Irrigation Department is in charge of these machines, and is seeing to it that, especially now, during Gangasagar Mela, there is no difficulty in the movement of vessels.
