Bengal aiming to become self-reliant in onion production
On Friday, Bengal Chief Minister conducted a high-level meeting with officials of agriculture department at Nabanna to discuss the problems faced by potato farmers. The State Agriculture Minister informed that the CM has directed the officials to take steps so that farmers do not incur losses.
Incidentally, potato production in the same plot in Singur, which was acquired for the Nano factory, has gone up by 15 per cent this year when the land got back its original character after 10 long years.
After 10 long years of political and legal battle, the farmers in Singur have got back their plots and with the help of Mamata Banerjee’s government, farmers have once again initiated cultivating paddy, potatoes, pulses and other crops on the same plot.
The Minister also said that measures have been taken to make the state self-reliant in production of eggs and green chillies. Steps are also being taken to increase production of green chillies and sesame seeds. He added that Bengal would soon become self-reliant in onion production as well. This year, Burdwan has produced onions that weigh around 450 g each.

শুক্রবার নবান্নে কৃষি সংক্রান্ত একটি উচ্চ-পর্যায়ের বৈঠক করেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। বৈঠকে তিনি আলু চাষীদের সমস্যার কথা আলোচনা করেন এবং নির্দেশ দেন যেন চাষীদের ক্ষতি কমাতে অবিলম্বে পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হয়।
উল্লেখ্য, সিঙ্গুরে যে জমি টাটা ন্যানো গাড়ির জন্য অধিগ্রহণ করা হয়েছিল, সেই জমিতে দীর্ঘ দশ বছর পর ১৫% বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে আলু উৎপাদন। দীর্ঘ আইনি ও রাজনৈতিক লড়াইয়ের পর সিঙ্গুরের কৃষকরা তাদের জমি ফায়ার পেয়েছেন এবং মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের মা, মাটি, মানুষের সরকারের উদ্যোগে চাষীরা সেখানে নতুন করে চাষবাস আরম্ভ করেছেন। তাদের সরকারি তরফে অনেক সুযোগ-সুবিধাও দেওয়া হয়েছে।
নবান্নের বৈঠকের পর কৃষিমন্ত্রী বলেন যে রাজ্য ডিম, তিল ও লঙ্কা উৎপাদনে স্বাবলম্বী হতে পদক্ষেপ নিচ্ছে। পেঁয়াজ উৎপাদনেও শীঘ্রই রাজ্য স্বাবলম্বী হবে বলে জানান কৃষিমন্ত্রী। এবছর বর্ধমানে ৪৫০ গ্রাম ওজনের এক-একটা পেঁয়াজ ফলেছে বলে জানান তিনি।
