Bengal set the business model for India’s Gem & Jewellery Industry post GST era – Dr. Amit Mitra told at an interactive session with GJEPC

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) organized an interactive session on Jewellery Industry with Dr. Amit Mitra, West Bengal Finance Minister & Mr. Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman, GJEPC, India , along with many other dignitaries and senior officers of Government of West Bengal.

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) was set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India (GoI) in 1966. It was one of several Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) launched by the Indian Government, to boost the country’s export thrust, when India’s post-Independence economy began making forays in the international markets. Since 1998, the GJEPC has been granted autonomous status.

The GJEPC is the apex body of the gems & jewellery industry and today it represents almost 6,000 exporters in the sector. With headquarters in Mumbai, the GJEPC has Regional Offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Surat and Jaipur, all of which are major centres for the industry. It thus has a wide reach and is able to have a closer interaction with members to serve them in a direct and more meaningful manner.

Over the past decades, the GJEPC has emerged as one of the most active EPCs, and has continuously strives to both expand its reach and depth in its promotional activities as well as widen and increase services to its members.

During the discussion Dr. Mitra said “what Bengal has done for the gems & jewellery industry post GST era is path breaking act in any government in any state in India.” He also said he was instrumental and faught with all the other stakeholders to bring down the GST for the industry to 3% only.

He also added that this industry will grow as bigger as the IT industry in near future.

Export promotion zones will be developed to make one stop for any work. Training for craftsman and workers to work in better environment.

GJEPC is aiming to be the number one country globally and export 60 Billion USD by 2022,$80 billion by 2025 will be the target.

Dr. Amit Mitra said follow the international trends so that design and quality matches the global standard. In future India will set the trends in global market. CAD CAM needs to be a major tool for the industry. 

GJEPC is going to introduce ID card for Gold and Jewellery workers for easy identification 10000 such card will be issued initially.
