Birati Jalshaghar organised their annual Concert yet again with international stalwarts of music on 19th of March at Krishti Auditorium, New Barrackpore. The concert commenced with a chivalrous solo of Pt. Kumar Bose. He played ‘teentaal’ in ‘bilambit’ and ‘drut’. The solo was unconventional as he did not follow the traditional structure of through which a Tabla solo is been played.
As he joined his able student Sri Kunal Patil with him, he mentioned beforehand that the solo would be more of a soundscape showcasing the contrast between both the repertoire of the instruments. The masculine approach and the unique forte of Sri Patil added to the musicality of the overall performance beautifully. Traditional compositions of both the instruments were played with great dexterity. Sri Pankaj Mishra was on Sarengi.
The next, was a ‘Kathak’ performance by Kumari Sudatta. She was accompanied on Tabla by Sri Chiranjit Mukherjee and on Pakhawaj- Sri Kunal Patil. Not to be exaggerating, it was a very powerful performance. Specifically compositions of both the instruments like ‘baat’ and ‘rela’ respectively were played with great dexterity.
Considering the musicians to be comparatively young and new to the fraternity, a lot of maturity was surprisingly found. Apart from the skill; which was too evident and the prime element of the whole performance, musicality of was also existing within the depths. She started with the traditional format and went on to various compositions of her ‘Gharana’. Both the accompanist’s coordination is undoubtedly mentionable in this particular performance.
The last program turned out to be the epitome of the musical saga. It was a performance by Pt. Rajan Sajan Mishra accompanied by Pt. Kumar Bose on Tabla and Sri Sumit Mishra on Harmonium. In moments the atmosphere turned its being into classic blue. They started with a ‘Bandish’ in ‘Bilambit Ektaal’ in Raag Sudh Kalyan.
The immaculate intricacies went on building the sonata with the magical ‘Theka’ of Pt. Bose. Then they went onto a ‘Bandish’ in ‘Madhyalaya Teentaal’ and ‘Surfak Taal’. The contrast in musicality in Pt. Kumar Bose was worth noticeable. The performed ‘Raag Basant Bahar’ next in ‘Madhyalaya Teentaal’. They sang very old compositions which took us to trance of time travel. They concluded their performance with a ‘Bhajan’.
