KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club and Rainbow Athletic Club played out a goalless draw in their Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ encounter on Monday at Mohammedan Sporting Ground.

Mohammedan SC dominated proceedings and created better goal-scoring chances in front of their home fans but the Black Panthers were let down by their final pass and finishing. They will surely be kicking themselves for not burying numerous goal-scoring opportunities they created, especially in the second-half.

As expected Mohammedan SC have tried to assert their dominance from the outset and the hosts came close to opening the scoring in spectacular fashion following a slick sweeping move at the end of which Mohammad Amirul was  denied by the Rainbow custodian Ankur Das in the 7th minute.

Rainbow were impressive and well organised in the back restricting the Black Panthers speculative long range efforts, while looking dangerous on the counter courtesy of the lively Felix Chidi.

Ankur, despite his short stature, showed impressive aerial presence and the entire Rainbow defence looked comfortable in absorbing Mohammedan SC’s attacking pressure, while looking to catch their opponents off-guard on the counter.

Following a scoreless first-half, the pattern continued with Mohammedan SC displaying slick passing and technical ability without causing any real threat in the final third.

Rainbow were also clever throughout, using delaying tactics such as players going down for cramps to ensure the match was of a stop-start nature and prevent Mohammedan SC from finding their rhythm on attack.

The Black Panthers threw numbers forward in the final ten minutes of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Newly appointed Black Panthers coach Saheed Ramon will have to think long and hard about his striking options going forward if he hopes to push the likes of Peerless SC and Bhawanipore FC for a top three finish.

Mohammedan SC who have 3 points from 3 matches will take on George Telegraph next on August 29 at Mohammedan Ground.
