She was Dream Girl and She is still a “Dream Girl”;yes we are talking of the ultimate lady of Bollywood for many Hema Malini, A dancer, An actor and member of parliament.
She along with her Jaya Smriti in association with Calcutta Club and Indo Occidental Symbiosis will present the “Synergy” a dance fussion program with Sukhishvili Dance Troop of Georgia’s performance and Indian classical dance. Indian Classical Dance Bharatanatyam ,Kathak & Pung Chalom of Manipur. After 55 year again a Georgian group will perform in India.
Hema Malini expressed her deep love for City of Joy and her cultural critical eye. She also told that though Mumbai and Delhi event has completed successfully but Kolkata is a real testing ground for any Artist.
The event will be at Calcutta Club on 15th September 2017. Already a full house is expected out of the event.
The Georgian National Ballet was the first professional state dance company in Georgia. Founded by Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili in 1945, it was initially named as the Georgian State Dance Company. Thanks to this company the Georgian national dancing and music has become known in many parts of the world.
Throughout its history the Georgian National Ballet has appeared at the Albert Hall, The Coliseum, The Metropolitan Opera and Madison Square Garden, among others. In 1967, La Scala welcomed them – reportedly the first and the only time a folklore group was given a chance to perform on its stage.
The costumes are designed by Simon (Soliko) Virsaladze (1908-1989).Currently, the founders’ son Tengiz Sukhishvili is the Artistic Director and General manager of The Georgian National Ballet. His spouse Ms. Inga Tevzadze is also a former dancer, now a ballet master. Iliko Sukhishvili Jr. is a chief choreographer of the Georgian National Ballet today. Nino Sukhishvili is a deputy-manager and costume designer.
The Georgian National Ballet has seventy dancers and a small orchestra.
A performance by the Georgian National Ballet’s dancers in which the female dancers, wearing long skirts, appeared to glide across the floor was an inspiration for writer Terry Nation in creating the Daleks for the television series Doctor Who.
Bharatanatyam, sometimes referred to as Bharathanatiyam or Sadir, is a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Traditionally, Bharatanatyam has been a solo dance that was performed exclusively by women, and expressed Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism, but also of Vaishnavism and Shaktism.
Bharatanatyam’s theoretical foundations trace to the ancient Sanskrit text by Bharata Muni, Natya Shastra,its existence by 2nd century CE is noted in the ancient Tamil epic Silappatikaram, while temple sculptures of 6th to 9th century CE suggest it was a well refined performance art by mid 1st millennium CE. Bharatanatyam may be the oldest classical dance tradition of India.
Kathak is one of the ten major forms of Indian classical dance.The origin of Kathak is traditionally attributed to the traveling bards of ancient northern India known as Kathakars or storytellers.The term Kathak is derived from the Vedic Sanskrit word Katha which means “story”, and Kathaka which means “he who tells a story”, or “to do with stories”.
Wandering Kathakas communicated stories from the great epics and ancient mythology through dance, songs and music in a manner similar to early Greek theatre. Kathak evolved during the Bhakti movement, particularly by incorporating the childhood and stories of the Hindu god Krishna, as well as independently in the courts of north Indian kingdoms.
Kathak is found in three distinct forms, named after the cities where the Kathak dance tradition evolved – Jaipur, Banaras and Lucknow. Stylistically, the Kathak dance form emphasizes rhythmic foot movements, adorned with small bells (Ghungroo), and the movement harmonized to the music.
The legs and torso are generally straight, and the story is told through a developed vocabulary based on the gestures of arms and upper body movement, facial expressions, stage movements, bends and turns. The main focus of the dance becomes the eyes and the foot movements. The eyes work as a medium of communication of the story the dancer is trying to communicate. With the eyebrows the dancer gives various facial expressions.
The difference between the sub-traditions is the relative emphasis between acting versus footwork, with Lucknow style emphasizing acting and Jaipur style famed for its spectacular footwork.
Pung Chalom of Manipur
This is a famous Manipuri Dance which is said to be the soul of Sankirtana Music of Manipur. This is a unique dance that is a prelude to the famous Ras Lila Dance. This dance moves to the beat of the pung which is a kind of hand operated drum wherein the male and the female dancers move in symphony. Acrobatics are performed without breaking the rhythm of the dance.
