Bengal Govt plans to go green in power production
In a unique move to generate power by adopting a “clean and green” method, the Mamata Banerjee-government has decided to set up a 1,000 MW solar-hydro power plant at Ayodhya in Purulia.
Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, the state Power minister, said the decision to set up the new Turga Pump Storage Project, which is unique in its kind, has been taken up to ensure that the state does not face shortage of power even after five years from now. “The project is unique in its kind because no thermal energy will be used to generate power in the solar-hydro power plant. It will be a clean and green power generation project,” the Minister said adding that there is no shortfall in power supply in the state but it has been projected that if no steps are taken from now onwards, then there could be a shortfall of around 3,000 MW in 2022.
Keeping the situation in mind, the state government has taken the step to set up the power plant where 250 MW of power will be generated in each of the four separate units of the project. There will be an investment of around Rs 4,650.69 crore for the project and the construction of the power generation plant will be completed within 81 months from when the work will start.
Already there is a 900 MW pump storage plant at Ayodhya in Purulia. But the new project is different from the existing one in which water is lifted using thermal power. At the same time, the state Power department is also developing a 650 MW power station in Sagardighi. According to the state Power minister, the situation in the state in terms of power would further improve with completion of the projects.
