Octogenarian, Cornell alumni, Doyen of Indian industry and a great philanthropist, Shri Ratan Tata fulfilled his promise to a leading Diamond Manufacturer. Shri Ratan Tata visited India’s city of Diamonds, Surat on a personal invitation by Shri Govind Dholakia. After being bestowed upon with the prestigious ‘Santokbaa Humanitarian Award’ in Mumbai in the 2017, instituted in the memory of the mother of Shri Dholakia, Shri Tata had promised a visit to Surat.

Tata began his career in the Tata group in 1961. He started on the shop floor of Tata Steel, shovelling limestone and handling the blast furnace. Three years later in 1964, a 13-year boy reached Surat in search of job. Seemingly contradictory, the journey of these two men has many parallels. Determination, commitment, enthusiasm and passion are few elements which bind these two gentlemen who themselves have carved niche in their respective fields.

On his maiden visit to the city, he recollected an earlier occasion when he touched Surat on his way to Navsari almost two decades ago. Shri Dholakia, a visionary, welcomed Shri Tata with words of gratitude. Tata’s and Dholakia’s observe similar business practices, rich in ethics and transparency, with successive generations adhering to same principles.

With keenness, Shri Tata studied diamond technology and its application in diamond production, e-commerce, HR and Research at SRK. While visiting the state-of-art diamond manufacturing facility, he interacted with all the three generations of Shri Dholakia. On the shop floor at SRK, he acquired all the details of diamonds from mines to market. Shri Tata also interacted with the delegation comprising of other diamond producers and gathered details about diamonds’ impact on the Indian economy.

During his ‘Fireside Chat’ with Generation Next of SRK he answered the many queries raised by the younger generation of SRK. He opined on issues related to family business and professionalism, notion of progress, inclusive growth and equal opportunity in India. While asked, “How does he want himself to be remembered in future”, he said, “With full humility, I say that I want to be remembered as a person who contributed, though little, to create an atmosphere of equality in India.” He further said that India’s growth story is written by people like Shri Dholakia, who create global businesses with dream and determination, that too with utmost humility.

Shri Tata was very excited and happy to see the progress of Surat. He thanked SRK family for hosting him and showing him a New India. He also relished on the Gujarati cuisine, specially prepared by the ladies of the Dholakia family. Later, on his way to Dumas Airport, he visited various historic places of Surat including the Dutch and Armenian Cemetery, Parsi Agiyari, Chintamani Jain Temple, Fort and Andrews Library.
