Md. Tarique gets a second life at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital Kolkata after his dreadful road accident
– He suffered a severe injury due to an accidental piercing of an iron rod through and through his head

Kolkata, May 29, 2018: When almighty wants to save you none can harm, even a near-death situation.  Apollo Gleneagles Hospital Kolkata doctors came as god’s messenger to Md. Tarique.

On 28th April while the city was sleeping, Md Tarique, a 24-year-old young man was fighting for life in a dreadful car accident near the Keshtopur flyover. He suffered a severe injury when an iron rod went through his head. He was immediately brought to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata, where he underwent a lifesaving surgery and treatment under Dr Binod Kumar Singhania, Consultant Neuro Surgeon.

Md. Tarique was instantly intubated at the emergency unit to stabilize him and to protect airway. Due to the critical placement of the iron rod pierced into the forehead, every step of the procedure turned out to be a challenge, be it the intubation process or reading a CT report. After the necessary investigation he was taken to the operation theatre for removal of the rod through endoscopy and surgery was conducted with proper hemostasis which controlled the bleeding.

The surgery went on for more than two and half hours followed by CT scans and CT angio revealed that he had injuries which were severe. He was then shifted to ICU with ventilator support. After showing gradual improvement in his condition doctors shifted him out of the ICU within a few weeks of the surgery. Today, he is able to sit straight without support and respond to normal conversations. With consistent physiotherapy and speech therapy, doctors have a positive outlook on his recovery.

Commenting on this Dr Binod Kumar Singhania, Consultant Neuro Surgeon, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata said, “This case was extremely tricky because a large iron rod had gone through the patient’s forehead. However, since he was brought to the hospital immediately without wasting much time, we have been able to save him. Hence, we always highlight the importance of golden hour after any accident. Along with coming on time, the immediate intervention at the emergency played the most important role.”

Azizul Haque, Tarique’s close cousin who has been taking care of him along with his parents expressed, “When he got to the hospital he was bleeding profusely and was unconscious. Honestly we had no hope of getting him back. But the doctors here acted as God and with their sincere effort we have got him back.

”Mr Rana Dasgupta, CEO Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata said, “This surgery is indeed a miracle and among the most complex and challenging ones performed in this hospital till date. We are very proud to have performed a surgery of this nature successfully. While treating him, our doctors have been very spontaneous and persistent as always. Along with Tarique’s family, it is also a very emotional moment for all of us at the hospital. We wish him all the very best for a promising future.”
