The two-day Seminar had four sessions – Three Technical Sessions on Media & Women, Media & Design, Media & Human Rights and a panel discussion on “Media at crossroads: Censorship, Social Media and Fake News”. The conference discussed subjects such as increasing censorship, atrocity against women, paid news, social media trolls, rampant fake news etc. It publicized the need to break stereotypes through the change in media policies. It elaborated how media is the reflection of our society and the way it works.

On the first day of the conference, delegates from 11 states of India and from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka exchanged their thoughts and submitted their research papers on the impact of media in today’s society. In today’s era when society faces some major challenges in terms of gender injustice, socio- political rights etc. mass communication plays a pivotal role in developing opinions. Social media is often the primary source of information and contributes in building perceptions on various serious issues. Platforms like Y – Factor enables students to engage with personalities of national and international repute and discuss the impact and contribution of media in developing the society.

The second day of the conference had a panel discussion, which saw presence of eminent personalities such as Nirupama Subramanian, Resident Editor, The Indian Express, Mumbai, Bachi Karkaria, Columnist, The Times of India, Dilrukshi Handunetti, Consultant Editor of the Weekend and Daily Express and other noted dignitaries. The speakers discussed about the current role of women in mass media and how they were stereotyped and portrayed in a sexist light in the past. Currently there has been a paradigm shift in the status of women and they are equally contributing significantly in all sectors including media.

The discussion also highlighted issues related to censorship, social media and fake news. In today’s era, social media plays a critical role in building a brand. Social media is an important platform which create perceptions and can also often circulate fake news which in turn might create unnecessary social turmoil. People often believe messages that are circulated in various social platforms and tend to promote them without even checking its authenticity. Hence, censorship is highly recommended to control the flow of information going through any public domain.
