Two great Institutions the Indian Museum- the paradigm of Indian culture, heritage and archaeology and the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata- the flag bearer of friendship and cultural exchange between China and India together for the first time collaborated together to host “A workshop and demonstration on Chinese Crafts” at the Indian Museum on the 16th of October. The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata Ma Zhanwu along with Director of the Indian Museum Rajesh Purohit and Education Officer of the largest museum in India Sayan Bhattacharya convened at the Workshop.

The Chinese Consulate throughout the year works tirelessly to streamline and enhance the cultural exchanges between India and China. After successfully venturing into the BJ Block Salt Lake Durga Puja, the next step in its endeavor is this workshop. Children between the ages 5-12 enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Some adults were also seen participating. Chinese artists and Craftsmen guided the participants meticulously in Paper cutting, Dough Modelling, Pyrography, Molten Sugar Blowing, Sugar Painting, Micro carving, Fan painting, Engraving, and Embroidery. Members of the Yunnan Folk Literature and Art Association attended the workshop. Yang Haitao, Chairman and Wang Zhongde, the Vice Chairman of the Association along with others spearheaded the workshop.

The Director of the Indian Museum Rajesh Purohit would also like to display such workshops on Indian Crafts in China. Both the institutes are hopeful that such joint endeavors would give a much-needed boost to the Indian and Chinese Crafts. The Consul General hoped that children and youngsters would benefit from such workshops.
