EASTERN RAILWAY EXPANDS SOLAR POWER CAPACITY TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Kolkata, November 17, 2024:
Eastern Railway continues its commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint by significantly expanding its solar power capacity. As of October 2024, Eastern Railway has successfully installed solar power plants across various divisions and workshops, adding a total of 750 KWp (0.75 MWp) to its renewable energy infrastructure. This new addition brings the cumulative solar power generation capacity of Eastern Railway to a remarkable 22.348 MWp.
In line with its green energy initiatives, Eastern Railway has also achieved an impressive milestone in solar energy generation. As of October 2024, the total cumulative solar energy produced by the network stands at 24.80 million units, resulting in substantial cost savings amounting to Rs. 13.59 crore in the current fiscal year alone. These developments mark a significant step forward in Eastern Railway’s ongoing efforts to transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
Building on this momentum, Eastern Railway has set an ambitious target for the financial year 2024-25, with a plan to install an additional 6.01 MWp of solar power capacity, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and green energy practices.
Eastern Railway’s ongoing efforts are part of a broader initiative by Indian Railways to adopt renewable energy sources, thereby reducing its reliance on conventional power grids and mitigating the environmental impact of rail operations.
