IGNCA Hosts the First Suneet Chopra Memorial Lecture on Art & Criticism
New Delhi, 4th April 2025: The Conservation Division & Cultural Archives of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) hosted the inaugural Suneet Chopra Memorial Lecture on the theme “Art & Criticism: An Art Historical Revisit.”
This lecture was dedicated to the memory of Suneet Chopra, an eminent art historian, cultural critic, politician, and thinker whose contributions have significantly shaped contemporary art discourse in India.
The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. R.H. Kulkarni, Professor and Head of the Department of Art History at the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath. His insights provided a profound exploration of the evolving narratives of art criticism and its historical perspectives.
The session was chaired by Sri Ashish Mohan Khokhar, a renowned art historian, art critic, scholar, and author of over 40 books on diverse subjects. The welcome and introductory address was delivered by Dr. Achal Pandya, Professor & HoD, Conservation & Cultural Archives, IGNCA. Suneet Chopra’s wife Mrs. Sumitra Chopra and Mrs. Madhu Prasad and Mrs. Neena Rao also spoke about the works and contributions of Suneet Chopra.
This memorial lecture aimed to bring together scholars, artists, and art enthusiasts to reflect on the dynamic interplay between art, criticism, and historical context. It provided a platform for critical discourse on the evolving role of art in shaping societal narratives.
