THE WELL AT MAHESHMUNDA STILL EXISTS AS A PANACEA

Grapevine is that, Prince Dwaraka Nath Tagore used to drink water lifted from the well at Maheshmunda for its purity. At that time buckets of water lifted from the well at Maheshmunda Railway station premises are being transported through the Railway route in jars to the Jorasanko residence of the Tagore family at Kolkata. The fame of this well at Maheshmunda in the Madhupur – Giridih section which is at present in Asansol Division was extended throughout the Bengal and its adjacent states. A few decades ago when piped drinking water was not abundant, this well at Maheshmunda was the principal source of potable drinking water for the adjacent areas & also for the passengers at Maheshmunda. Even today the local villagers drink this water believing the myth that the water of this well has a special character to act as a panacea and enhances digestion. Eastern Railway has taken special initiatives to renovate & maintain this well at Maheshmunda. The well is 4.25 meters in diameter (approx.) with a depth of 30 ft. in the rocky area and sheds with strong fabrication. Even today the well is existing with the same glory and quenches the thirst of anyone who likes to take water from it.
