Chinese Consulate Kolkata to Hold Chinese Film Festival 2018
The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata, in cooperation with the West Bengal Nandan Film Center, will hold Chinese Film Festival 2018 from 11 to 13 August 2018.
Seven Chinese films will be screened at the West Bengal Nandan Film Center during the three days. On 11 August, Kung Fu Yoga, Xuan Zang, and The Assassins will be screened from 13: 00 to 19:30. On 12 August, Big Fish and Begonia, Tai Chi Hero, and My Kingdom will be screened from 13:00 to 19:00. On 13 August, Rest On Your Shoulder will be screened from 18:00 to 20:00. Free tickets will be available in Nandan Complex since 8 August.
After screening of each film, there will be a short quiz on the film and China, and souvenirs will be given to the one who first comes out with the right answer.
Moreover, the Chinese Consulate will host a film review contest among the audience after the Chinese Film Festival concludes, and cellphones of Chinese brand will be awarded to the best film review writers. Details of this contest will be released soon.
The film festival is part of the on-going effort of the Chinese Consulate to increase understanding of China by people in Kolkata and Eastern India, and promote cultural exchanges between China and Eastern India.
The Chinese Consulate is also showing some films at the schools and universities in Kolkata as well as in other cities or states in Eastern India. For example, it has screened the Big Fish and Begonia in the Calcutta International School.
Introduction on the films to be screened:
- Kung Fu Yoga is an action-adventure comedy film on how a renowned professor of archaeology (starred by Jack Chen) at the Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi’an, China, teams up with young Indian professor Ashmita from National Museum Institute, Rajasthan to locate India’s lost Magadha treasure in Tibet.
- Xuan Zang is a historical adventure film based on monk Xuan Zang’s seventeen-year overland journey to India during the Tang dynasty in the seventh century.
- The Assassins is a historical drama film on two assassination attempts on Cao Cao, a prominent warlord who became the de facto head of the central government in China towards the end of the Han Dynasty.
- Big Fish and Begonia, based on ancient Chinese legends, is a animated epic fantasy film about how Chun, a young girl of the mystical race of beings that control the tide and the changing of the seasons, fights to face adventure and sacrifice in order to protect a human boy’s soul until it is ready to return to the human world.
- Tai Chi Hero is a martial arts film telling the continuing adventure of Yang Lu Chan as he bumbles his way through learning Chen-style Kung Fu, which is later named as Tai Chi, and evolves into the first stage of being the most formidable Tai Chi Master.
- My Kingdom is a martial arts drama about the deadly rivalries between “wusheng” (male warrior roles in Peking opera).
- Rest On Your Shoulder is a fantasy film on a young lady who agrees to be turned into a butterfly to save her boyfriend’s life.
