Literature and art have made the New Town Book Fair their home in more than 70 bookstalls

Kolkata, December 24th, 2019: There is hardly any Bengali one will find who would deny their love for books. The winter season arrives with the essence of festivities among which book fair is one of the most exciting ones indeed. The 6th edition of New Town Book Fair 2019 was inaugurated in the graceful presence of Shri Firhad Hakim, Honourable Mayor of Kolkata and Honourable MIC, Urband Development, Government of West Bengal, Shri Sujit Bose, Minister of Fire and Emergency Services (Independent Charge) & Forest, Government of West Bengal, Shri Debasis Sen, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, IT Department, Government of West Bengal & Chairman, WBHIDCO, Shri Jogen Chowdhury, Eminent Painter, Shri Joy Goswami, Celebrated Poet, Shri Pankaj Saha, Renowned Poet, Shri Subodh Sarkar, Celebrated Poet and Shri Nalini Bera, Renowned Novelist.

The idea of organizing New Town Book Fair was conceived back in 2014 and now in its sixth year, the Book Fair with its seventy book stalls is happening in the New Town Mela Ground. The prime attraction of the Book Fair is the National Poetry Festival which is conducted in association with Sahitya Akademi. Eminent authors and poets from in and around the corner of the country assemble on the literary gala, recite their poetry and exchange the enriched sphere of their interest on seminars held for artistic enlightenment. This year the New Town Book Fair will bring the youth into the literature as it hosts the Kolkata Youth Lit Meet for two days, 4th and 5th January 2020

The Book Fair is going to host seventy book stalls and renowned publishers like Anondo Publishers, Woodpecker, Parul Prakashani and Evolve will participate in the fair.

“The enthusiasm and energy is surreal. It’s evident that literature and art still encourage people in the digital age, where buying and reading books are believed to be a thing of the past. We welcome each and every one to join us and celebrate literature and unfurl the creative and imaginative minds of the current generation. ” said Prof. Urmila Sen, President, New Town Book Fair.

Themes have been an integral part of Kolkata’s festivals and the New Town Book Fair is no exception, as the New Town Book Fair Authority decided that “200 years of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar” will be the theme for 2019. The 6th edition of the New Town Book Fair is stepping up to a whole new level as it hosts a music competition along with the recitation competition. There will be seminars conducted at the book fair on interesting topics such as “Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and his life’s journey” and “Hundred years of Manna Dey and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay”.

New Town Book Fair will be continued from 24th December 2019 to 5th January, 2020. The gates will open every day at 1 p.m. and will close at 8 p.m. and on Holidays the gates will open at 12 p.m. and close at 9 p.m.
