Over three hundred girl students of J D Birla Institute spent a hectic day picking up self defence skills from David Flood – an Australian Katherine Muay Thai expert. With the prevalence of assaults against women and girls in India, Mr Flood hopes to instill confidence through basic self-defence techniques.
“Though it is a short time to teaching a new skill, but enough to empower the girls to feel confident and come out of serious situations,” Mr Flood, a sixth-degree black belt in martial arts and Muay Thai, said.
A three-day workshop “Limitless Potential – A Step towards Gender Equity” was organized by J D Birla Institute (Science, Commerce & Management) in association with Vidya Veda Foundation and Esesson Foundation, Australia, at the Institute’s campus which combined goal settings, psychology, nutrition and well-being, team building and leadership, physical training and self defence.
Ms Deepali Singhee, Principal, JDBI, said “We need to start changing the mindset of the society and sensitize the youth and education institutes can play a major role in it. We are organizing this workshop to promote and create awareness about self reliance in girl students through an amalgam of fundamentals in self defence techniques, knowledge of nutrition for healthy living, stress management and building of self confidence.”
