OVERVIEW OF THE MSc IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
Recent years have witnessed an escalating demand in the job market for applied mathematicians complemented with computational skills. This trend is here to stay for a while because the drivers of technology in the early 21st century, namely AI/ML, Analytics, Data Science, etc are all thriving on the foundation of applied mathematical and statistical sciences.
Present equivalent academic programs offered by other Universities in the state of West Bengal do not blend academic and professional world curriculum equally, but rather incline more to pure academics. Evidently there is an inviting gap and urgent need to prepare a curriculum that would prepare students for upscale employability. The program of MSc in Applied Mathematics has been carefully crafted to exploit this niche. The program is designed to bridge the gap between the changing demand of the professional world and the applied mathematical skills of knowledge workers.
It is a two-year post graduate degree program with a well-balanced curriculum between applicable mathematics and its applications. The specialization topics are mostly industry oriented or interdisciplinary nature which acts as a bridge between academia and industries and are offered through electives. Emphasis is given on solving real life problems in various application domains using computational tools. The application domains include data science and machine learning, digital signal & image processing, computational fluid dynamics, mathematical biology & epidemiology, etc. The Program boasts of nine full time university faculty members led by a Nehru-Cambridge Scholar.
MODERN PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE
Academic delivery employs modern pedagogical tools, such as case-based teaching, problem-based learning, project-based learning, etc. Students will engage in real-life project work right from the very first semester, which will culminate in a capstone project in the final semester. The program will be administered with close connection with corporate practitioners. CAREER PROSPECT S
The curriculum has been designed to cater to academia as well as professional fields of data-driven, computer-aided business environments including R&D. Potential employers are going to be the IT/ITeS sector, Consulting Companies, Banking Sector, NBFCs, Investment Companies, etc.

OVERVIEW OF THE MSc in APPLIED STATISTICS & ANALYTICS PROGRAM
Prolific English writer HG Wells (1866 – 1946) is quoted to have said, “Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write.” That day has arrived.
In sync with the zeitgeist, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), WB
launched its MSc in Applied Statistics & Analytics Program in the Academic Year 2020-21. Notably undaunted by the debacle of Covid 19. The title Applied Statistics & Analytics captures the guiding spirit of the Program: Reality has Primacy. It aspires to prepare the students, in a systematic and scientific way, for what David Spiegelhalter calls “The Art of Statistics: Learning from Data.” Upon completion of this 2-year post-graduate program, the learners will be proficient in deploying a rich portfolio of statistical as well as data analytic techniques using contemporary software tools for the purpose of solving real-life problems. They will be able to ascertain facts from figures and distil insights from index numbers. Case-based, problem-based, and project-based teaching-learning activities are infused throughout our Program, with research work kick-starting at the very first semester. Flipped/ blended learning methods are implemented with a strong emphasis on ‘deliverables’ of learner activities. Academia-industry collaborative initiatives are under way to help our students learn straight from the horse’s mouth. The PPDAC problem-solving cycle (see the adjacent graphic) is at the heart of our approach to the activity-based 2-year post-graduate Program of MSc in Applied Statistics & Analytics at MAKAUT, WB. The Program boasts of nine full time university faculty members led by a Nehru-Cambridge Scholar.
