The First-Ever Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament was Flagged-Off at CSIR-CMERI on 11th September 2021 by Dr. Sharmila Mande, in the distinguished presence of Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, Dr. P.K. Singh, Director, CSIR-CIMFR, Dhanbad, Dr. Arun Bandopadhyay, Director, CSIR-IICB, Kolkata, Shri Tarun Dey, Former National Football Player, Dr. R.K. Sinha, Secretary, CSIR-Sports Promotion Board. The Prof. S. K. Joshi Memorial Football tournament (SKJMFT) has been participated by 19 teams from CSIR Labs across the Nation. Over 250 Footballers from across the Nation are playing in the event.
Besides, the Foundation Stone of the CSIR-CMERI Multi-Purpose Ground was laid by Dr. Sharmila Mande. The Multi-Purpose Sports Ground will be a magnificent Sporting Facility with an Area Span of 12000 Square Meters. Dr. Sharmila Mande, shared that every individual requires Fitness to perform whatever job they practice. It is really great to see that CSIR-CMERI has taken an initiative to convert barren land into a Sports Facility. Dr. Sharmila Mande expressed her delight at hearing that the first Sports Event to be organised in this Venue during the month of December, 2021 will be the Dr. Asima Chatterjee Memorial Women’s Cricket Tournament honouring the memory of Dr. Asima Chatterjee a pioneer in Chemistry and first-ever awardee of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award. Dr. Sharmila Mande congratulated Prof. Harish Hirani for his initiative to empower Women through Sports.
Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, while delivering the Welcome Address for the Flagging-Off Ceremony of the First-Ever Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament welcomed all the players to the CSIR-CMERI ‘Zero-Waste Colony’. He stated that the Sports and Sportsmanship are the key-drivers of passion, fervor and Team Spirit. The lessons learned from Sports can a spirit of Partnering, Collaboration and lead to Impactful and Collective Outcomes. Sports should be embraced as a ‘Way of Life’ and Scientists and Technical Staffs should engage in Sports as it would improve their agility and passion towards their Work. Prof. Hirani urged all the participants to Prove their excellence through their performance in the Tournament and show how they can aptly face any adversity. The happening of the Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament shows that CSIR is an integrated Organisation and we all come together to celebrate Sports. CSIR-CMERI also has created its own Oxygen Parlour which would help the Players in revitalising themselves as well as detoxify their body.
Dr. Sharmila Mande, while flagging-off the First-Ever Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament thanked Prof. Hirani and shared enthusiasm and excitement to witness the participation of so many footballers in an event. The Determination and Grit with which the First-Ever Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament is being held will help Sports overall. Even Scientists can be stalwart Sportsman and one-day some player from CSIR might make the Nation proud through Global Sporting Achievements.
Dr. P.K. Singh, Director, CSIR-CIMFR, Dhanbad, thanked Prof. Harish Hirani for hosting such a Wonderful Sporting Event and honouring the legacy of Prof. S.K. Joshi. Football is a Team Game and it emulates life as every individual in a Society has a very important role to play. West Bengal is the Land of Football in India and hosting the event in this beautiful state is of paramount importance.
Dr. Arun Bandopadhyay, Director, CSIR-IICB, expressed his gratitude to Prof. Harish Hirani for hosting such a wonderful event. Being a Sportsman helps in every aspect of Life. Dr. Bandopadhyay requested all to play the game safely and in the fervour of true Sportsmanship.
Dr. R.K. Sinha, Secretary, CSIR-Sports Promotion Board, shared that since Prof. Harish Hirani’s leadership in the CSIR- Sports Promotion Board, Sports has achieved an accelerated momentum in CSIR. The patronage of Dr. Shekhar C Mande, DG, CSIR, has also helped in organising the Sporting events. The Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament is an apt homage to the legacy of Prof. S.K. Joshi and thanked CSIR-CMERI for its wonderful hospitality.
Shri Tarun Dey, Former National Footballer, thanked CSIR-CMERI for hosting the First-Ever Prof. S.K. Joshi Memorial Football Tournament as it would enthuse and encourage the Youth of the region to participate in Sports, especially so after the COVID enforced lockdown. This Mega Event reminded him of his Youth as a Football Player as the enthusiasm and excitement for the event was tremendous.
