Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised a Special e-Session on Current Development in the area of Agricultural Research in India with Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agriculture Research & Education, Govt. of India and Director General, ICAR on February 23, 2022 at 10:30 on Zoom Platform.
 
While welcoming the guest, Shri Lalit Beriwala, Senior Vice President, MCCI in his address mentioned that Agriculture Sector assumes importance and policy makers do also attach special significance to it in the country’s overall development trajectory. The latest PLFS (Periodic Labour Force Survey) report of 12-Aug-2021 shows a sharp increase in employment in agriculture from 42.5% of the total employment in 2018-19 to 45.6% in 2019-20.
 
Shri Beriwala expressed that the Chamber feels privileged to associate itself with DARE ICAR and looks forward to closer interactions in the coming days and deeper engagement in the sector of Agricultural Research in Eastern India.
 
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education, Govt. of India and Director General, ICAR expressed that agriculture is not just a job for a farmer to be engaged in, more importantly it generates resources which are the fuel for driving human livelihood
 
During the COVID time, unlike other sectors, the agriculture sector has grown tremendously, Dr. Mahopatra pointed out. There is a significant increase in total production in the sector from 2020 to 2021; as the total production was 310 million tons in 2020, it increased to 316 million tons in 2021. Agriculture sector significantly contributes 20 per cent in country’s GDP, that is very momentous achievement.
 
While speaking on total trade figure, Dr. Mohapatra mentioned that during the last fiscal year, India has been able to export worth USD 41.8 billion food grains, though there are few food items which are still being imported (approx value is USD 22 billion), the sector is able to obtain USD 19 billion surplus in the trade. India is the leading exporter of the Basmati Rice; has exported 46.30 million tons worth USD 4.018 billion during the year 2020-21, he referred.
 
Shri Mohapatra said, “GOI has decided to initiate Palm Oil Cultivation programme in the North East and other states like Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal”. He has requested the State Governments of these states to come up for this initiative.
 
While speaking about technological revolution in Agriculture, Shri Mohapatra pointed out same facts about the technical revolution in Indian Agriculture
 

  • The new variant of Sugarcane seed Co 028, has brought revolution in the production of sugarcane. In Uttar Pradesh the sugarcane production has increased from 60 ton to 80 ton per hector.
  • There is high potential of sugarcane to produce bio-fuel to meet country’s renewable energy demand by 2025.
  • Herbicide Tolerance is an example of how farmers control weeds in the crops especially in Rice and this technology has helped immensely to use less water consumption in cultivation.
  • To ensure micro-nutrient in the crops, 36 Bio-fortified crops will be introduced in market soon.
  •  Government of India has decided to reduce 25-30 percent usage of chemical fertilizers in cultivation. To reduce the chemical foot-prints in agriculture sector, natural farming processes are pushed up by the Government.
  • In the context of digitization in agricultural sector, Artificial Intelligence can be used as planning tool sector. The developments in Drone Technology can help farmers to understand the condition of the cultivated crops.

 
While mentioning the agenda of Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India – “One District One Crop”, Shri Mohapatra said that they are working on doubling the Agricultural export of the country so that the agricultural sector can contribute significantly to the projected USD 5 trillion Indian Economy.
