Hsuan Tsang Temple in Kolkata held the CHONG YANG ELDER’S DAY FESTIVAL EVENT
By Abbot Hui Rong of Hsuan Tsang Temple

EVENT HISTORY
The ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar is an auspicious day for the Chinese. In the Book of Yi Jing, the number 6 belonged to the Yin character while the number 9 was thought to be of the Yang character. Nine (jiu in Chinese) is the number of yang (part of yin-yang), and both the day and the month are nine, so the nine and nine meet again, and the double yang is called the “Chong Yang Festival” (Chong means Double). Since ancient times, there has been a folk custom in China to pray for longevity. The homonym of Nine Nine (jiu jiu in Chinese) means longevity, health and longevity. The Double Ninth Festival has become the Chinese Respect for the Elders Festival. Respecting the old, celebrating the old, loving the old, and helping the old are the traditional virtues and humanistic customs of the Chinese nation.

THE EVENT
On October 9, 2022, Hsuan Tsang Temple grandly held the Chong Yang ELDER’S DAY FESTIVAL event to celebrate the festival for the elderly according to Chinese customs.

The event spread the feeling of respect, warmth and care of the society, and the deep friendship between the mainland Chinese and the overseas Chinese in India. Hsuan Tsang Temple also prepared gifts for each elder and organised a prayer for longevity. More than 100 elderly people and more than 200 guests and volunteers gathered together, praying for the health and longevity of the elderly in the world, and the safety and happiness of all living beings.
