57th Convocation of Indian Statistical Institute held at Kolkata campus

The 57th Convocation of Indian Statistical Institute was held today (31st January 2023) at Amrakunja, 203, B.T. Road, Kolkata. In this occasion, Professor Sir David John Spiegelhalter, OBE FRS, Chair, Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, University of Cambridge, UK, delivered the convocation address. Dr. Sankar Kumar Pal, President of the Institute and National Science Chair, SERB-DST, Govt. of India, Former Director and Distinguished Scientist of the Institute, presided and delivered his welcome address.
He conferred the Ph.Ds, Master, Degrees, and PG Diplomas to the recipients. Dr. G. P. Samanta, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India graced the programme as Special Guest. Professor Sir David John Spiegelhalter, congratulated all the graduating students and started demonstrating the power of Statistics in the real world and also discussed the complex statistical issues, for example, COVID related statistical data like COVID death, testing regimes, false positives, and negatives, excess deaths, and so others. He also mentioned that the pandemic demonstrated to everyone how important statistics are, both for those making policy and for the public understanding of what is going on. He concluded that it is wonderful to see all the students have worked so hard to gain their qualifications and ready to embark on the next stage in their careers. Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Institute presented the annual review and expressed her best wishes for all the graduating students. Prof. Amita Pal, Dean of Studies (Officiating), concluded the programme by delivering his vote of thanks to all, who made this programme successful.
In this occasion, a total number of 365 students have been conferred with the Ph.Ds, Masters, Degrees and PG Diplomas. Out of these, there were 29 Ph.Ds, 212 Masters, 77 Degrees, and 47 PG Degrees in different categories. Fifteen students were also awarded for their excellence. Besides, a total number of 62 candidates received Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA).
