“Sacrifice of tribal community neglected,” Anant Nayak

India’s tribal community has made a very significant contribution to the freedom struggle. However, it’s unfortunate only a few names are part of the discourse in the history of the freedom struggle. There is hardly anything to be seen in the history books about the heroes of the tribal community. The book ‘Janjati Gaurav’ edited by Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi and Mr. Satyendra Singh and published by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and All India Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram is an effort to fill this gap. The book was released in the auditorium ‘Samvet’ of IGNCA. On this occasion, the chief guest of the event was Shri Anant Nayak, a member of the National Tribal Commission. The other eminent guests present on the occasion were Shri Rambahadur Rai, President of IGNCA, Shri Ramchandra Kharadi, President of All India Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, and Dr. Sachidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA. This book informs the readers about 75 great men and women and the tribal community.

On this occasion, an important exhibition has also been organized at the Kala Darshnam gallery of IGNCA, which will continue till February 27. In this exhibition, beautiful pencil sketches of the stalwarts of the tribal community who contributed and sacrificed their lives at various stages of the freedom struggle have been displayed. Also, useful information about them has also been given. This exhibition gives very important information about the contribution of the tribal communities in the freedom struggle.

Expressing his views on the occasion, Shri. Anant Nayak said that when he was studying in college, he used to wonder if there was no contribution of the tribal community in the freedom struggle, as he did not get adequate information on the subject in the books he read. He said that this book is an important effort in this direction and the editor and publisher of the book deserve adulation. He further added that the British had to face a lot of difficulties due to the tribal communities, so the British did commit atrocities on the tribal communities and made oppressive laws against them.

Shri Ram Bahadur Rai said that this book is like a scripture for the tribal people and for all of us. This book will bridge the gap and feeling of neglect about our tribal areas and tribal people and introduce them to us, of whom we know very little. Dr. Sachidanand Joshi said that today many such stories have come before us, which tells us that the struggle for freedom was not all about a few people’s struggle whose names keep appearing before us for the last 75 years. Apparently, the struggle for independence was people’s struggle in every corner of India.

At the beginning of the inauguration of the event, the students presented a song on tribal pride, and at the end, the students of the North East presented the Bihu dance and other dances. Short films depicting the sacrifices of the tribal community were also screened at the event.
