Statistics Day 2023 at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata

In recognition of the notable contributions made by the Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics, statistical systems and economic planning, the Government of India in 2007, has designated 29th June as the “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Days to be celebrated every year at the National level.

The objective of the celebration of this Day is to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation to acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis and to pay homage to him.
Prof. Mahalanobis set up the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata in 1931. The Institute was declared an “Institute of National Importance” under the aegis of the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, through an act of Parliament in 1959.

ISI also celebrates 29th June as “Workers Day”.

The theme for Statistics Day 2023 is “Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

The celebrations of the programme started with garlanding the bust of Prof. Mahalanobis by the faculty members, employees, students and guests and paying their obeisance to the Father of Statistics at Amrapali Lawn.

Shri Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, MD & CEO, of Bandhan Bank has graced the occasion as the Special Guest at the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium of the Institute. He pictured how statistics is tied up with the Banking System and paid his laurels to the pioneer of Statistics in India, Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis.

Swami Suvirananda, General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math & Mission and Guest of Honour expressed his honour to Prof. Mahalanobis and described the role of Professor in the field of Statistics in the spiritual light of Swami Vivekananda.

Dr. G.P. Samanta, Chief Statistician of India & Secretary, MoSPI conveyed his admiration to the legendary statistician and the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute virtually. He expressed the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for the development of the country among the modern generation.

Dr. Pronab Sen, Chairman, of ISI Council while expressed his reverence virtually and depicted that the expectations from our statisticians are high and increasing.

Prof. A.B. Raha, Former Faculty Member of Stat-Math Unit and Special Guest of the Institute paid his homages to Prof. Mahalanobis. He shared with the audience regarding the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis as a statistician of independent India.
Prof. Sankar Kumar Pal President of, the Indian Statistical Institute graced the occasion and delivered his valuable speech. He also appraised the audience regarding the importance of the Day.

Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Institute spoke in her welcome address to the audience about Prof. Mahalanobis’s contribution regarding the uses of statistics in social welfare, science and other fields of research.
Dr. Partha Pratim Mohanta, President of, the Indian Statistical Institute Workers’ Organisation expressed his gratitude to Prof. Mahalanobis and the role of the organisation in the present scenario.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Ravinder Kumar, Chief Executive (Admn. & Finance) of the Institute.
On this occasion, a pictorial representation of Prof. Mahalanobis was also organised throughout the Institute to the memories of glimpses of him.
