FIVE MAIDAN CLUBS TO REMAIN CLOSED FOR JOKA-ESPLANADE METRO WORK

Kolkata, Date: 21.07.2023

Like all other Metro projects in the city, the Joka-Esplanade Metro project has also got momentum in recent years. Construction work of Majherhat Metro Station has reached its final phase and this station will be commissioned this year. Construction work on Park Street and Esplanade stations of this corridor is going to start soon. These two stations will be two of the most important stations of this corridor.

In order to make the land available for construction of these two stations, a joint meeting was convened on 17.07.2023 at the Conference Room of West Bengal Transport Corporation’s Maidan Tent where Dr. Saumitra Mohan, Secretary, Transport Dept., Govt. of West Bengal chaired this meeting. In this meeting, it has been decided to temporarily close/relocate five clubs in the Maidan area to enable Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) to carry out the project work in this area. Activities of these clubs, namely Calcutta Police Club, Calcutta Kennels Club, Rajasthan Club, Kalighat Club (Sports Ground), and Kidderpore Sporting Club will be affected during this construction work. These clubs have agreed to co-operate with Metro Railway Authorities for the construction works of this project. Kolkata Mounted Police Paddock and Riding School will be relocated permanently since part of the over ground structure of the upcoming Esplanade station will be built on the existing ground of this school.

All the club representatives present in this meeting agreed to close/relocate their clubs. Kolkata Police has also identified a place to permanently shift Calcutta Police Club and Kolkata Mounted Police Paddock and Riding School from their present locations.

Shri Harsimran Singh, Chief Project Manager, RVNL, other officials of RVNL, officials of Ministry of Defence, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police Traffic Dept., Assistant Commissioner of Police (HQ), Kolkata Police, and others were present in this meeting. RVNL has agreed to restore the status quo ante of these clubs by reconstructing or reinstating the structures after the completion of the Metro work. RVNL has requested all to clear these sites at the earliest so that the work can start within a month.
