INS Malvan Strengthens India’s Coastal Defence with Indigenous Anti-Submarine Capabilities
Second Mahe-Class Warship Commissioned to Boost Maritime Security and Support Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Karwar, July 22: The Indian Navy has added another indigenous warship to its growing fleet with the commissioning of INS Malvan, the second vessel of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series. The induction marks another important step in India’s efforts to strengthen coastal defence and enhance underwater surveillance capabilities.
The commissioning ceremony took place at the Naval Base in Karwar in the presence of senior military officials, naval commanders, representatives of the Indian shipbuilding industry and invited dignitaries. The event underscored the Navy’s continuing emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and maritime preparedness.
Built in India, Designed for India’s Maritime Needs
Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), INS Malvan represents India’s expanding expertise in indigenous naval construction. The vessel incorporates a high percentage of domestically manufactured equipment and systems, reflecting the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at reducing dependence on imported defence platforms.
The warship is part of a planned fleet of eight Mahe-class vessels that will enhance the Navy’s ability to monitor and protect India’s extensive coastline.
Specialised Role in Anti-Submarine Warfare
Unlike larger destroyers and frigates that primarily operate in deeper waters, INS Malvan has been specifically developed for operations in coastal and shallow-water environments. These regions often present unique operational challenges where hostile submarines may attempt covert movement.
The ship is equipped to detect, track and respond to underwater threats while also supporting maritime surveillance and coastal security operations.
