Kolkata, July 23, 2026: In a major success against trans-border maritime crime, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has intercepted a fishing vessel allegedly involved in the illegal trafficking of arms and ammunition near the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), preventing what officials described as a significant cross-border smuggling attempt.

The operation, carried out on July 22, resulted in the seizure of a cache of concealed weapons and ammunition, while four Indian crew members aboard the fishing boat were apprehended for their alleged involvement in the operation.

Intelligence-Led Operation

According to official sources, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs received from central intelligence agencies regarding suspected illegal maritime activities near the Indo-Bangladesh maritime boundary.

Based on the intelligence, the Indian Coast Guard mounted a carefully coordinated search and interception mission in close collaboration with the Sunderbans Forest Department and other intelligence agencies.

Officials stated that the swift exchange of actionable intelligence played a crucial role in the success of the operation.

Suspicious Fishing Boat Tracked

Investigators revealed that the suspect fishing vessel had departed from Jherkhali Creek in the Sundarbans during the early hours of July 22.

Coast Guard units conducted an extensive search across the designated maritime zone before successfully locating and intercepting the vessel operating near the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Following the interception, Coast Guard personnel carried out a thorough search of the fishing boat.

Illegal Arms and Ammunition Recovered

During the inspection, officials recovered a concealed cache of arms and ammunition that was allegedly being transported illegally across the maritime border.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was suspected to be destined for Bangladesh, although authorities have not disclosed the exact quantity or type of weapons recovered.

The timely interception effectively prevented what investigators believe was an organised cross-border gun-running operation.

Multi-Agency Coordination

The successful operation highlighted the close coordination between multiple government agencies, including:

  • Indian Coast Guard
  • Central Intelligence Agencies
  • Sunderbans Forest Department
  • Local enforcement agencies

Officials said the seamless coordination, rapid intelligence sharing and well-planned operational response were instrumental in tracking and intercepting the vessel before it could complete its alleged mission.

Boat and Crew Handed Over for Investigation

Following the seizure, the fishing vessel, the four crew members and the recovered arms and ammunition were handed over to the West Bengal Marine Police Station, Sundarbans, for detailed investigation and legal proceedings.

Authorities are expected to examine the origin of the weapons, identify those involved in the alleged smuggling network and determine whether the operation has links to larger transnational criminal organisations.

Strengthening Maritime Security

The successful interception underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s continued focus on protecting India’s maritime borders against emerging security threats, including arms trafficking, illegal infiltration, narcotics smuggling and other forms of organised maritime crime.

Officials reaffirmed that the force remains committed to safeguarding the country’s coastal and maritime interests through advanced surveillance, intelligence-driven operations and close coordination with central and state agencies.

The latest operation also highlights the strategic importance of the Sundarbans region, where constant vigilance is required due to its complex network of rivers, creeks and international waterways that can be exploited by criminal syndicates engaged in cross-border smuggling activities.
