Kolkata, August 19, 2026: Kolkata hosted the 2nd Rail Synergy & Bengal Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Vendor Connect Summit 2026 on Wednesday at ITC Sonar, bringing together senior railway officials, industry leaders, manufacturers and MSME representatives to discuss opportunities emerging from the rapid modernisation of Indian Railways.
Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), West Bengal State Council, with active participation from Eastern Railway, the summit focused on the theme: “From Modernisation to Expansion: From Wagons to Tracks, Safety and Deepening a Sustainable Supply Chain for Indian Railways.”
Eastern Railway was represented by General Manager Geetika Pandey and Principal Chief Commercial Manager Dr Uday Shankar Jha. The event provided a platform for railway decision-makers and representatives of the regional industrial ecosystem to explore stronger partnerships and greater participation by domestic suppliers.
Indian Railways enters a phase of accelerated transformation
The summit highlighted 2026 as an important year in India’s railway transformation, with several major infrastructure and capacity milestones being discussed.
According to the figures presented at the event, nearly 98 per cent of India’s broad-gauge railway network has been electrified. The railway sector has also earmarked ₹1.17 lakh crore as safety-related capital expenditure for FY 2025-26.
The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network recorded an average of 381 train operations per day during FY 2024-25, while India’s overall railway capital expenditure reached ₹2.65 lakh crore in FY 2025-26.
These investments are expected to create significant opportunities for domestic manufacturers, technology companies and MSMEs supplying products and services to the railway ecosystem.
Senior railway officials and industry representatives participate
The summit brought together senior officials from Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway, Metro Railway Kolkata and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL).
Key railway departments represented at the event included:
- Commercial
- Materials Management
- Operations and Maintenance
- Electrical
- Signalling and Telecommunications
Representatives from the MSME Development Facilitation Office, industry associations, original equipment manufacturers, Central Public Sector Enterprises, rolling-stock and fast-track manufacturers, as well as local MSME innovators, also participated.
The broad participation was aimed at creating stronger connections between railway requirements and India’s domestic manufacturing and technology capabilities.
Three key sessions focus on future railway requirements
The programme opened with a session on strategic implementation, followed by three plenary discussions.
The sessions examined:
Localisation of rolling stock:
Ways to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities and strengthen India’s railway supply chain.
Kavach signalling deployment:
The role of indigenous railway safety technology in creating a safer and more technologically advanced rail network.
Freight infrastructure and logistics:
Strategies for converting the capacity of Dedicated Freight Corridors and Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals into long-term freight contracts and commercial opportunities.
MSMEs get a direct platform to connect with railway buyers
One of the major attractions of the summit was its emphasis on direct business engagement.
The event included Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Government (B2G) vendor-connect meetings, allowing MSMEs to interact directly with potential railway buyers and decision-makers.
The programme also featured targeted MSME meetings, guidance on pre-qualification requirements, a live Government e-Marketplace (GeM) helpdesk, and an exhibition walkthrough.
The exhibition showcased emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled inspection drones and digital twins, highlighting the growing role of digital technology in railway infrastructure and maintenance.
Focus on domestic partnerships
Addressing the gathering, Eastern Railway General Manager Geetika Pandey stressed the importance of developing strong domestic partnerships.
She said the objective was not merely to create modern railway assets but also to expand them rapidly through robust domestic collaborations. Empowering MSMEs and integrating local vendors into the railway supply chain, she said, could help build a safer, faster and globally competitive railway system.
Her remarks underlined the growing importance of Indian manufacturers and technology providers in meeting the country’s expanding railway requirements.
Commercial efficiency remains a priority
Eastern Railway Principal Chief Commercial Manager Dr Uday Shankar Jha highlighted the importance of efficient commercial systems and terminal connectivity.
He stressed that seamless commercial infrastructure and stronger terminal connectivity would be essential to convert increased railway capacity into long-term business partnerships.
He also emphasised simplifying vendor integration while improving commercial transparency and operational efficiency to accelerate growth in freight business.
Industry–Railway collaboration
Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Shibaram Majhi described the summit as an important bridge between the expertise of the railway sector and the industrial community.
According to him, closer cooperation between the two sectors can accelerate the development of a modern and self-reliant railway network.
A growing opportunity for Bengal MSMEs
The summit comes at a time when Indian Railways is expanding its infrastructure, electrification, signalling systems, freight corridors, rolling stock and digital capabilities.
For Bengal’s MSMEs, this expanding ecosystem could create opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, technology, logistics, safety systems and railway-support services.
The greater challenge, however, will be ensuring that local enterprises are able to meet railway procurement standards, qualify as approved vendors and scale their capabilities to participate in large and technically demanding projects.
The 2nd Rail Synergy & Bengal MSME Vendor Connect Summit 2026 therefore served not merely as an industry gathering but as a platform to strengthen the connection between railway modernisation and India’s domestic industrial ecosystem.
