EASTERN RAILWAY INSTALLS SLIDING BOOMS AT LEVEL CROSSING GATES TO ENHANCE SAFETY AND TRAIN PUNCTUALITY

Kolkata, July 15, 2024:

In a proactive move aimed at enhancing safety and maintaining punctuality in train services, Eastern Railway has undertaken a significant initiative to install Sliding Booms at Level Crossing Gates across various stations and sections. This initiative, led by the Signal & Telecom Department, addresses the challenges posed when Level Crossing Gate Booms are damaged due to incidents such as Lorry or Truck trying to trespass and dashed with gate boom, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow for both road and rail users by using Sliding Boom.

The primary objective of introducing Sliding Booms is to mitigate the impact of Level Crossing Boom damage swiftly and efficiently. This innovative solution prevents undue detention of trains by allowing continued operation of the Level Crossing Gates while repairs to the main boom are underway.

Marching ahead in a mission mode, in Month of June, 2024 , Eastern Railway’s Signal & Telecom Department has installed a total 19 Nos. Sliding Boom type gates at Level Crossing Gates situated at different stations and in different sections & places viz at Bethuadahari, Rejinagar, Sargachhi, in Jiaganj- Murshidabad section, in Jiaganj- Bhagabangola section, Bhagabangola- Krishnapur section, at Dhapdhapi, in Dhapdhapi- Gocharan section, Gocharan- Dakshin Barasat section, at Hotor, in Hotor- Magrahat section, Machhalandapur- Gobordanga section, Barasat- Sondalia section, at Habra, in Habra- Machhalandapur section etc . With this a cumulative total of 37 Level Crossing Gates are provided with Sliding Booms in the current Financial Year 2024-25 upto the Month of June.

When a Level Crossing Boom is hit by a vehicle it becomes non-functional as interlocking and signaling system gets affected causing detention of both rail and road traffic. Sliding Booms are used in such a situation to overcome the problem and keep the level crossing gate functional with all safety measures. This helps to prevent undue detention of trains till the repairing of the main gate boom is completed.

Installation of Sliding Booms at Level Crossing Gates will not only help to maintain punctuality in train service but also is a major step to ensure the safety of both rail and road users as an alternative boom will be available to protect Level Crossing.
