On World Radio Day, Akashvani FM Gold Kolkata Champions Environmental Protection

Kolkata, February 13: World Radio Day is celebrated globally to acknowledge the profound impact of radio on society. Despite the dominance of visual media, radio continues to be an indispensable platform for communication and awareness. This year, aligning with the theme “Radio and Climate Change,” Akashvani Kolkata’s FM Gold section took a step beyond the airwaves by organizing a tree plantation drive in Bagbazar, North Kolkata. The initiative aimed to promote environmental consciousness, not just for a single day but as a commitment to future generations.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local community, who appreciated the effort of those who, while usually working inside studios, stepped outside to contribute directly to the environment. Additionally, electronic radios were distributed to underprivileged children, along with refreshments, making the occasion even more meaningful. Several RJs from FM Gold Kolkata, under the leadership of Programme Executive Suvayan Bala, actively participated in the initiative.

Suvayan Bala, Programme Executive, FM Section, Akashvani Kolkata, stated:

“We often think about the environment only when extreme weather events, like heatwaves, strike. But environmental consciousness must be a year-round effort. Radio, as a medium, plays an essential role in spreading awareness. Akashvani Kolkata, being the largest public service broadcaster in the country, has always worked towards the welfare of society while providing entertainment. This year, in keeping with the theme, we planted saplings, hoping that, just as people cherish radio, they will develop a similar love for nature and continue planting trees in the future.”

Dr. Mousumi Chatterjee, Deputy Director (Programme), Akashvani Kolkata, shared:

“From bustling cities to remote villages, radio remains a beloved medium, a part of our nostalgia and heritage. As India’s largest public service broadcaster, it is our responsibility to make a lasting impact on society. I am honored to be part of this year’s World Radio Day initiative, which reflects our commitment beyond broadcasting.”

Akashvani Kolkata has consistently taken initiatives to make radio more accessible and relevant to the general public. Through such efforts, it continues to reaffirm its role as a powerful medium of social change and awareness.
