Government Dismisses Rumours on Monetisation of Temple Gold Holdings

New Delhi, May 19: The Government of India has firmly denied reports and social media claims suggesting that it plans to monetise gold reserves held by temples or other religious institutions across the country.
In an official clarification issued on Tuesday, the government stated that rumours claiming a proposal had been approved to issue gold bonds in exchange for temple gold reserves are “completely false, misleading and without any basis.”
The clarification came amid increasing circulation of speculative posts on social media alleging that the Centre intended to introduce a nationwide monetisation scheme targeting gold owned by temple trusts and religious bodies.
The government also rejected claims that gold plating used on temple towers, doors, or other religious structures would be treated as part of India’s “Strategic Gold Reserves.” Authorities described such reports as “entirely baseless” and urged citizens not to spread unverified information.
Officials warned that circulation of false news can create unnecessary confusion among the public and damage social harmony.
The Centre further advised citizens to depend only on official announcements issued through authorised government channels, including verified press releases, official websites, and public communication platforms.
The clarification was issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) following widespread online speculation regarding alleged plans involving temple gold reserves.
