India Accelerates Indigenous Defence Production with Launch of Advanced NIBE Manufacturing Hub in Shirdi

India’s defence modernisation drive entered a new phase on Friday with the inauguration of a large-scale private defence manufacturing facility by the NIBE Group in Shirdi, Maharashtra. The project reflects the Centre’s growing emphasis on strengthening indigenous military production capabilities and expanding private-sector participation in strategic industries.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the complex in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior defence officials, military leadership, and representatives from the domestic defence industry. The facility is expected to manufacture a range of advanced systems including artillery platforms, missile technologies, rocket systems, explosive materials, and autonomous defence equipment.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of “Suryastra,” described as India’s first 300-kilometre-range Universal Rocket Launching System. The foundation for a dedicated missile manufacturing complex connected to the programme was also laid during the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh said that true strategic independence can only be achieved when a nation develops the ability to design and manufacture its own weapons and defence technologies. He observed that modern warfare is increasingly shaped by precision weapons, advanced surveillance, artificial intelligence, automation, and long-range strike capabilities rather than conventional force size alone.
Referring to ongoing geopolitical conflicts across different regions of the world, the Defence Minister stated that global military trends clearly show the importance of technological superiority and domestic industrial resilience. He noted that dependence on external suppliers for critical defence systems could become a strategic vulnerability during times of crisis.
The Shirdi facility also showcased several indigenous technologies linked to explosive production and sustainable industrial systems. Among them were technologies related to TNT and RDX production as well as renewable bio-energy infrastructure. A separate technology cooperation agreement involving satellite assembly systems was also announced during the programme, reflecting India’s expanding interest in space-linked defence manufacturing.
Government officials highlighted that India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem has undergone rapid transformation over the past decade through policy reforms encouraging domestic production, innovation, and private investment. Initiatives such as Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, iDEX, defence industrial corridors, and positive indigenisation lists have significantly increased the participation of Indian companies in military production.
Industry experts believe the new manufacturing hub could emerge as an important node in India’s growing defence industrial network. Apart from boosting military manufacturing capacity, the project is also expected to create employment opportunities, encourage MSME participation, and support technology-driven skill development in Maharashtra.
The development comes amid India’s broader effort to position itself as both a major defence manufacturing nation and an exporter of indigenous military systems. Over recent years, India has expanded exports of artillery systems, naval platforms, missiles, radars, and electronic warfare technologies to multiple countries.
For Shirdi, globally known as a major spiritual destination associated with Sai Baba, the project marks a notable diversification into advanced industrial and strategic manufacturing sectors, symbolising the merging of economic development with national security ambitions.
