IIT Bhubaneswar, Banashree Semiconductors Forge Five-Year Partnership to Accelerate India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem

Bhubaneswar, August 5: In a significant step towards strengthening India’s semiconductor research and innovation ecosystem, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has entered into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Banashree Semiconductors to promote collaborative research, industry-oriented education, skill development and advanced semiconductor technology initiatives.
The agreement was signed on behalf of IIT Bhubaneswar by Prof. Vijay Shankar Pasupureddi, Dean, Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), while Dr. Chandramohan Umapathy, Director of Banashree Semiconductors, signed on behalf of the company. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar. Faculty members Dr. Navjeet Bagga and Dr. Sandeep Kumar Samal from the School of Electrical and Computer Sciences also attended the event.
Banashree Semiconductors specialises in advanced silicon-node, low-power chip design and optimisation of power, performance and area (PPA), with a particular emphasis on reduced transistor-count architectures for system-on-chip (SoC) applications. Through this collaboration, the company’s industrial expertise will be combined with IIT Bhubaneswar’s academic and research capabilities to advance innovation in semiconductor design.
Under the five-year partnership, both organisations will jointly undertake research and development projects, develop semiconductor design optimisation flows, facilitate faculty and student exchanges, and offer internships, training programmes and collaborative research opportunities. The collaboration will also explore externally funded research and consultancy projects while enabling shared access to computing resources, laboratory facilities, testing infrastructure, design tools and research equipment.
A major focus of the MoU is to provide students with practical industry exposure. IIT Bhubaneswar students will have opportunities to undertake internships, project work, training and research at Banashree Semiconductors. At the same time, the company’s engineers and scientists will contribute to academic and research activities at the institute. The partnership also includes plans for organising joint workshops, seminars, conferences, short-term courses and collaborative research publications.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the interface between academia and industry by aligning advanced research with the evolving needs of India’s semiconductor sector. It also aims to contribute to the development of highly skilled manpower and industry-relevant research, supporting the country’s growing ambitions in semiconductor design and allied technologies.
