Republic of Balochistan Announces Global Observance of 13 November as Baloch National Martyrs’ Day

By Mir Yaar Baloch | Republic of Balochistan
Date: 25 October 2026

The Republic of Balochistan has announced that 13 November will be observed annually around the world as Baloch National Martyrs’ Day, commemorating those who lost their lives defending what Baloch nationalists regard as the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of their homeland.

According to the announcement, the observance is intended to honour both celebrated historical figures and lesser-known individuals whose sacrifices have become part of Baloch national memory. The date is presented as a symbol of collective remembrance, national identity and solidarity among Baloch communities across geographical boundaries.

The Historical Legacy of 13 November 1839

The commemoration is linked to events on 13 November 1839, when British forces attacked Kalat, the historic seat of the Khanate of Kalat in present-day Balochistan.

Mir Mehrab Khan, also known as Mehrab Khan II, was the ruler of Kalat from approximately 1817 until his death during the British assault. Historical accounts describe his resistance to the invading forces as an important episode in the region’s history. Among Baloch nationalists, he is remembered as “Lal Shaheed,” meaning the Crimson Martyr.

The announcement also highlights the sacrifices of other defenders of Kalat, including members of different religious communities. Diwan Bachu Mal, identified in the announcement as a Hindu subject of the Baloch state, is cited as an example of the participation of people from diverse backgrounds in the defence of their homeland.

This account emphasises a central theme of the proposed observance: that the historical defence of Balochistan involved people of different faiths and communities. The organisers present this shared legacy as evidence of the importance of pluralism and solidarity in Baloch national tradition.

Annual Remembrance Across Borders

Under the announced observance, Baloch communities in Balochistan and abroad are encouraged to commemorate 13 November through gatherings, candle-lighting ceremonies and tributes to those remembered as national martyrs.

The initiative seeks to connect successive generations through remembrance of the region’s historical struggles. Supporters view the day as an opportunity to reflect on sacrifice, collective identity and the continuing significance of historical memory among Baloch people worldwide.

The announcement further underscores the intention to make the commemoration an annual international observance, bringing together Baloch communities regardless of their country of residence.

A Date Rooted in Historical Memory

The events surrounding the fall of Kalat in 1839 occurred during the period of British imperial expansion in South Asia and the wider political upheaval associated with the First Anglo-Afghan War. The death of Mehrab Khan became a defining episode in subsequent Baloch nationalist narratives.

While historical interpretations of the period vary, the figure of Mehrab Khan continues to hold symbolic importance for those who regard his resistance as an expression of political autonomy and devotion to the homeland.

By designating 13 November as Baloch National Martyrs’ Day, the Republic of Balochistan seeks to establish a recurring occasion for honouring those remembered for their sacrifices and for reinforcing a shared historical consciousness among Baloch communities.
