Forest Department to grow and conserve medicinal plants
The forest department is planning to grow and conserve several species of medicinal plants in the three districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
These plants would be grown on 300 hectares of land and 200 forest protection committees (FPC) will work on the project.
If ordinary residents show an interest in growing these plants, the department will help them to do so and then sell them.
The department has chosen two places, Susunia Hills in Bankura and Kankrajhore in West Midnapore’s Belpahari for the project, under the Medicinal Plant Conservation Area (MPCA), this year.
These areas have been chosen because hilly regions are rich in bio-diversity and earlier several trees of medicinal value grew here.
According to the forest department, plants and trees such as amlaki, hartaki, kalmegh, ghritakumari, ritha, sarpagandha, pial have medicinal values and are economical. So people can make a good profit by planting such trees. Many medicines and even cosmetics are made using the extracts of these trees.

জঙ্গলমহলে ঔষধি গাছ লাগানোর উদ্যোগ বন দপ্তরের
বন বিভাগ পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুর, বাঁকুড়া ও পুরুলিয়া তিনটি জেলায় ভেষজ উদ্ভিদের বিভিন্ন প্রজাতি সংরক্ষণ করার পরিকল্পনা করছে।
৩০০ হেক্টর জমির ওপর এই গাছপালাগুলি হবে এবং 200 বন সুরক্ষা কমিটি এই প্রকল্পের কাজ করবে।
যদি সাধারণ বাসিন্দাদের এই গাছপালা চাষে আগ্রহী হয় তাহলে বন দপ্তর তাদের সাহায্য করবে এবং তারপর তাদের বিক্রি করবে।
এই বছর ভেষজ গাছ সংরক্ষণ এলাকার অধীনে এই প্রকল্পের জন্য বন দপ্তর দুটি জায়গা বেছে নিয়েছেন। একটি হল বাঁকুড়ার শুশুনিয়া পাহাড় ও কাঁকড়াঝোর এবং অপরটি পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের বেলপাহাড়ি।
এইসব এলাকা বাছাই করা হয়েছে কারণ পাহাড়ি এলাকা জীববৈচিত্র্য সমৃদ্ধ এবং আগেও এখানে অনেক ওষধি গাছ হয়েছে।
বন বিভাগের মতে, আমলকী, হরিতকী, কালমেঘ, ঘৃতকুমারী, রিঠা, সর্পগন্ধা, পিয়াল এই সব গাছ লাগানো বেশ লাভজনক এবং এগুলির ঔষধি মান আছে। অতএব এসব বৃক্ষরোপণের দ্বারা মানুষ লাভবান হবেন। অনেক ওষুধ এবং এমনকি প্রসাধন দ্রব্য এই সব গাছের নির্যাস ব্যবহার করে তৈরি করা হয়।
